I have a flywheel that the timing marks (TDC 1/4, 5, 10) are away from any of the pressure plate mounting holes. I'm trying to locate the correct position of the assembly marks on the flywheel to align the factory 'A' marks that are on the pressure plate and the spring plate. All my reference books indicate the 'A' marks should be lined up with the timing marks hole, but since they occur half way between two of the pressure plate mounting holes, I have two choices, what is the recommendation in that case please? All other mountings are correct, the crankshaft to flywheel washer etc is correct and the timing marks line up when the motor has cylinders 1 and 4 at top dead centre. It's just the holes for the 'A' marks that don't line up. This is an Australian built BMC 998 1967 build. The photo shows the timing marks at the top, (not quite in TDC position due to a slight rotation), with the assembly marks 'A' to the left at about 9 o'clock. TIA. |

Does the timing mark line up with the pointer when the engine is at TDC? |

Attachment: Mini Flywheel reduced.jpg Yes, everything lines up as expected except the assembly marks at their expected locations.I have just striped it down again and had a really close inspection at the hole opposite the timing marks and there looks like what could have been part of the letter 'A'(?) |

On further inspection I have located some centre punch marks on all three parts which does not line up with anything else, tempted to go with these marks as at least the are on all three parts, what do you think please? |

I think the 'A' should be at the top where the timing marks are on the flywheel. |

Are the drive straps on the right way round?? I don’t remember which is right. However, you can install them a#$se about ( don’t ask me how I know). Everything will go together quite neatly however the clutch will not disengage….   If you reverse the direction of the “A” strap in your photo it would move the “A” tag on the pressure plate quite close to the timing marks (ie at the top at TDC). .??? Cheers, Ian |

I'm sure the drive straps are on correctly as they've never been off. (I did think of doing this, thanks for the heads up). The timing marks are between the pressure plate holes, so unsure which side to go for. The mark in the photo above (that looks like a slash, or part of a letter(?)), is opposite the timing marks at the bottom of the fly wheel adjacent to that hole, is on the edge next to the ring gear. |

Sounds like it's the earlier 2 piece flywheel and it's been taken apart then assembled incorrectly. 6 bolts 6 possibilities only 1 correct. |

Hmmm, I've owned the car since 1980 and I'm the only one that's been in there so leaning toward it being built that way... Yes Cooperess, that is what all my books indicate as well, even the owners handbook that came with the car originally. The plot thickens,,, |

The solution to this issue can be found on page 100 of the Mini Deluxe Engineering Series book. No one should be without one. The timing marks on earlier flywheels, and those made in UK, are aligned with the through hole for the pressure plate. However, for the locally made flywheel AYA81, the timing marks are not aligned and as as shown in your photos. Unfortunately, the workshop manuals, even the latest one I have, continue to show the timing marks and the hole for the earlier configuration. I would align the A on the pressure plate with the A on the spring cover and not worry about the relationship to the timing mark. Regards, Tony |

Fantastic, so these flywheels are not fussy as to which hole to align the 'A's up with, is that correct please? |

Drawings show that the flywheel and the pressure plate are dynamically balanced as separate pieces. I doubt if it matters which of the three holes the A is lined up with, as long as the A on the clutch cover and aligned with the A on the pressure plate. There is no indication on the drawings that there is any A actually stamped in the flywheel. |
