This car is reported to be car number YG2S4 746 that was exported to the USA around the year 2000.
I notice that there is an entry in the register for YG2S4 746 showing a colour of Indigo Blue with a White roof.
For the auction car, the stamping of the number 4 in YG2S4 is questionable (can make out a faint 1 below the 4) and am wondering if this is in fact YG2S1 746?
If one of the registrars knows when car number YG2S4 746 was reported and added to the register? Was it before the year 2000?

Paul.

Paul, it ia a very tidy looking car with a few Mk 1 bits but mostly Mk 2 elements (seats / plastic heater / wheel arch extensions / bonnet badge). The NSW rego sticker shows it as a green & white car in 2000. Ian

Thanks Ian. Yeah it’s tidy. Just wondering if it’s a real S or a clone.

That chassis stamping is a total creation - fake. Not even a changed Mini K stamping

At this time they were stamping them in the middle of the panel and the car number was a larger font. Should be like this.

Here is a Mini K that also shows the style and placement so its not YG2S1 746 with the 1 restamped as a 4.

If you are keen to work out what the car was originally then the Body Code and Body Number might help.

MK2 shell body codes are as follows - 2/04 is Morris Mini 1100, 2/05 is Mini K, 2/05A is MK2 Minimatic, 2/06 is MK2 S,

Up to approx May 1970 the body stampings were in the gutter above the wiper motor.

From approx June 1970 the body stampings were on the drivers side firewall

If the firewall doesn't have the extra 2 binnacle nuts with the top nuts moved up then they have probably used a late MK1 body.

Great knowledge base on here as always. Kudos guys.
Notwithstanding whether it is s genuine body or not the fact the engine has been replaced makes it non genuine. It may be a very good car and may be a good buy at that price but if you are looking for an original then give it a miss.

Thanks for the detailed information. Owner says he has glued dynamat to the firewall, so he’s not interested in pulling it off to find out more.

Reading the BAT comments I was surprised that so many have no idea what the stampings should look like.

Probably why it was exported to the US. Easier to hide a fake. Owner honestly thinks he has a real S.

He probably bought it as an S.
In my experience people generally get all uptight and snarky when they are told they have bought a fake.

Bidding stopped at US$25K without reaching the reserve.

What's troubling about this car is that the ID has been tampered with.
Also, looking at the Queensland Rego sticker, I don't know how they managed to get it registered (did not inspect ID number?).

My Mini has all 6 nuts as in the picture, would that make it an early Cooper S Mk2?

Are you referring to the plate on the slam panel? That is just a dealer stock number from UK Motors QLD and that number would date the car to late 1970.
