I have an option to purchase an 1100 motor fitted to a 4 synchro remote box. Is it possible to use this with a pudding stick gear stick and if so how much buggering around is it? |

If you have an existing remote change gearbox you need all the parts here. They very simple to fit, you could even do the change with the engine in the car They were only used on basic spec minis, vans and mokes for a few years (once the 4 synchro was introduced until the rod change) https://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/manual- ... earchanges There’s some photos of how they look on this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=101964 |

Thanks for the reply Tim, if I go down this path can I use the existing 850 gear shift hole? In other words, not altering my existing floor pans. Would you happen to know if these part are available locally? |

I think the hole should be in the right spot but I haven’t tried this myself. All the parts should be available locally (used) but might be a bit tricky to find |

Another alternative is fit the 850 differential housing to the 4 synchro box. But it's not always simple because the bearing bores may not align perfectly. They were machined with the gearbox case. I've done 4 over the years but had to remachine 2 of them to fit. Handy that I have a mill. Edit BTW the 850 original shift is the magic wand. The later one in Tim's pics is affectionately called the puddin' stirrer due to how it rapidly develops slop from new. It's agricultural compared to the proper magic wand. ![]() |

I did this conversation to my 850 to make the interior look more original even though it had an 1100S and 4 synchro box. I was lucky enough that the diff housing didn’t need machining as described by Kevin above. Attachment: 7A266396-46F5-4390-9C7F-4DC4DAF52E6E.jpeg What I liked about this is that there are less linkages in the gearchange and therefore less wear points and it had a very positive change. I like the idea of this, is it only the diff housing that is needed? Now just to find another 850 diff housing. |

Essentially you just need to swap the diff cover to an 850 type. You’ll also need the vertical shift rod which has a cup on the end. If you already have an 850 gearbox you could use these parts They will often bolt right up, but the diff cover is line bored to match a specific case so they might not line up properly without machining. You’ll also need gaskets etc While you have the diff cover off I’d swap the bronze bushes for the shift rod as these wear out and cause slop |

Yes that’s the shift rod. If you need to get all the parts you need: Diff cover Shift rod Anti rattle plunger, spring, cap Bottom plate, set screws and spring washers Gearstick, retaining plate and set screws And I’d suggest replacing the bushes in the diff cover |

Have a look on youtube : Med race technologies - Project 63 part 13 . 4spd synchro box and 850 diff housing (they do install a s/c dogbox, but same principle.) |

I had it done in mine, unfortunately I can’t tell you how, as it was done by Readspeed in Bris when I had the 1275 & 4 synchro gb installed. I wanted to keep the original magic wand in same position and they did it no problems. Lovely shift, very direct, no slop and maintains originality. |
