Post subject:  ARP msa33/kenmsa33 Cooper S main stud set
Does this stud set have a different ARP part number as I can't seem to find it on their web site ? A few sites I have looked at have no stock, they do list a AEG323. I have had this S motor since 1976 and the crank has no wear @ std/std/std (en40b big end/main/thrust). If I cant find any, is it an option using the original studs and nuts or with new ARP nuts & lube (Minispares) ? Will I need hardened washers or without washers as per original ?

How about we rephrase this. What are people using for main bearing studs and nuts on a 1275 Cooper S motor when rebuilding it ?

im led to believe the arp version of this set didnt get it quite right, as all the studs were the same height, whereas on your s motor there are 2 long and 4 shorter studs, i do have a couple of these sets [studs and nuts cant remember if washers also] left but you would i believe need to trim down the outside studs or at the least check if they clear the gearbox housing as this is where the problem lies. let me know if these are of interest and i can dig them out tommorrow cheers

I had a big Mini research day today. I did some more digging and found the ARP set at swiftune. Their part number is SW-EB-ARP-MSA33 and it has 4 short and 2 longer studs with nuts and washers.They are a stepped stud. If I go down this track, I will probably get these. Thanks for your kind offer.
A bit of history.
When I rebuilt this motor in 1979, I just used new rod bolts and nuts and new main stud nuts. This was was taken out of my first '69 Mk2 S in 1981 and a built mk1 S motor took its place. The original motor has laid idle since then.
I know this is a "how long is a piece of string" type question, but are the ARP mains studs overkill and will the original type studs and nuts be sufficient? The original studs from what I have read appear to do the job well. It wont be a race motor. I just want to do it properly.
I have ARP rod bolts to put in and will buy their head stud kit.
