I guess it depends a lot on how much you do yourself

Dropping off a running car for the job will obviously add a lot of time and money in labour

If you did it all yourself and only replaced the synchro ring, it’d be a couple hundred once you take into account the gaskets, oil, coolant etc. There’s a decent chance that other things will need to be replaced while it’s apart and most shops won’t put it back together unless it’s all rebuilt and warrantable

Agree with Timmy, It's a bit of how longs a piece of string. Even doing it yourself once you get it open what else you find.

I handed my gearbox to a reputable mini rebuilder 18mths ago. It was already clean and all new bearings, layshaft & laygear (NOS) supplied. He replaced 1st gear, all baulk rings, thrust washers and it was around the $1300 region not including diff or gasket sets. So mostly labour (and by labour i mean knowledge), and a job well done i was happy to pay it even though I could have done it myself.

But that was my scenario, and i would suggest that would be a ball park minimum. If they are pulling the engine and find other things you can start multiplying that number by 3,4,5…. As Timmy suggests it would be a false economy to not check other things while the engine is out & split.
