Hi all, Is there a quick guide in how to start an a series out of the car? Or if an engine is in the subframe but not connected to wiring loom etc? Eh what pos and neg wires go where/coil/starter etc. Thankyou |

It's easy.. to start an engine you just need fuel and spark, and a way to make it turn, right? So put some fuel in the fuel bowl Connect a jumper cable from a battery negative terminal to the engine somwhere Connect the positive battery terminal to the coil positive, any old bit of wire will do, doesn't have to be thick. So now you have fuel and spark, you just need a way to turn the motor. Take your other jumper cable and connect it to the positive battery terminal. Touch the other end to the lug poking out of the back of the starter motor. It'll spark a bit, but it'll turn If everything else is right, then the motor will run till the fuel in the bowl runs out or you disconnect the positive from the coil |

I did this recently. Initially was thinking of making an engine test stand, but after seeing heaps of people on the internet run an a series engine on the floor sitting on the sump, I decided to do this instead. I'm a visual person, so used this diagram to assist in the electrical connections: Attachment: ballast_res_large.jpg I disconnected the fuel pump and gravity fed via a funnel for extra run time. Alternator is not connected - only there to provide tension on fan belt - depending how long you want to run, a fan/radiator may not be required. Engine is earth (-ve in this config). I'd prime the oil pump before inserting plugs and connecting ignition. |

Fuel and spark (with oxygen) also make a fire. Make sure you keep any sparks from jumper leads, etc away from any spilt fuel. |

A fire extinguisher handy is a good idea, particularly if the air filter is off And make sure you can easily remove the coil cable to stop it |
