Post subject: | Steering Column Sizes - Width and length |
Hi Guys Just fitted a billet works collapsible column per engineers requirements and came across an odd problem. The factory column bracket is 28mm diameter whereas the new column is 32mm. Billet works is showing a picture of their test stock column and it is 32mm. I have a 68 and 69 deluxe and both of them have 28mm diameter. I have 3 spare columns and they are all 28mm and one looks to be a clubman as it has a steering lock/ignition hole. Out of interest, no 2 of the columns that I have are the same length. They vary up to 60-70mm in length!. Does anyone know where the thicker 32mm column came from that they based their column off? Morris 1100 maybe or later clubman or rover? I had to add a section of pipe to the stock bracket to fabricate to fit. FYI all of my columns are 32mm at the very top but taper down to 28mm inside the cowl area not far from the top. So the bracket areas are all 28mm cheers Rick |

Lots of different columns out there. I have two clubman ones, with steering lock, that are 32mm (or just under) all the way down. My recollection is one is from a 73 GT, and the other from a 74 clubman. |

Ok thanks, they must have a late clubman one then as it was also the same diameter the entire length. Strange as their column is without steering lock, ignition |

The picture below shows the steering column diameters used at various times. Note, the Models shown are "first used on" and can also be found on other models not listed. The Parts books are somewhat lacking in detail with the part numbers. Essentially, the column outer tubes were made from 1 1/8 tube swaged out at the top for the top bush (early), or in later years, made from 1 1/4" tube swaged in to 1 1/8 at the bottom end for the bush. The black clamp can be one of two types with hole diameters to suit the tube. Regards Tony. |
