Have just swapped my wiper motor from single speed to 2 speed using the how to on the forum – easy job, worked first time as it should.

But, is the second speed meant to be faster than the original single speed, with all other things being equal and both motors having the round Aussie style body?

Short answer - yes.

Have you got the correct wiper switch and wiring? I had to run an extra wire from the motor to the switch when I installed mine.

I think IndigoBlue is asking about how the speed of a single speed 12AUW round body wiper motor compares to the two speeds of the later wiper motor. Is the high speed of the later motor the same or faster than the previous single speed motor?

My Mk2 has a factory 2 speed wiper motor and there isn't a significant difference between the speeds - nothing like modern cars.

I have done a bit of reading on the later Lucas style two speed motors and found a couple of different sites that show the third brush as being the one for high speed. This implies to me that the high speed should be faster than that on the equivalent single speed motor.
However, the speed is proportional to the torque for a given voltage on the DC motor. So I suspect we will only see a “high” speed when we have low friction in the system (including on the screen) which demands less torque.

What ever speed the wipers can produce, IMHO they are not very effective compared to modern wipers.

I still have the original single speed wiper motor in my 64 - which is useless. Would adding a relay to the wiper circuit it improve this any?

I am still learning about wiring as i go (with help from someone that knows)

MINIRO - the motor and gears can be coated in hardened grease after 50 years, and the rack is similar in that wear and dry lube create friction. Cleaning and relubricating would be something I’d do in your situation, although that means removing the assembly.

To answer your question, a good strong current is always better when powering a motor, so maybe do a test by replacing the active cable with a thicker wire direct from a strong power source and see if that helps before going to the effort of installing a relay.

I have already removed & pulled apart the wiper assembly. You are right - the grease was almost like a rock. I have since cleaned this out and re-greased it.

The unit is now installed again. But i am redoing the wiring in the engine bay, so seems like a great time to access the power situation to the wiper.
