| Post subject: | Sealing the Windscreen |
Hi All, Just wondering what people recommend when installing the windscreen? Sealant between rubber seal and glass? Between rubber seal and body? Both? Mine currently has nothing, and leaks in heavy rain (water appears to be coming in between glass and seal in the bottom corners) Thanks |

I noticed mine did the same, but my rubbers are quite old. Silicon spray should be safe to use and provide some rejuvenation and 'swell' the rubber up enough to keep it water tight and aid installation through lubrication. |

The usual sealer in the past, which I still use, is butyl mastic. Various brands make it and the factory used it to seal the speedo binnacle and the big hole in the rear seat panel for the rotodip as well. For the windscreens, once the glass is fitted to the rubber, leave off the plastic chrome lock strip and, from the outside, run a bead under the rubber flange, around both glass side and body side of the rubber seal. Fit the filler/lock strip and clean up the excess while it's soft, although it never hardens. And it is a bit 'Lionel Messi'. |

If the rubber is in good condition or new then there should be no problem with the glass to rubber seal, the most important is to seal the rubber to body area and pay particular attention to the sealing in the scuttle area, if this is not sealed properly it will leak! The best sealant to use is non skinning butyl mastic, bit messy but cleans up with mineral turps after fitting the locking strip to the rubber. |

I have exactly the issue described by Ben. I wondered whether it was to do with my new windscreen seal being the profile to suit laminated screens instead of the thinner toughened glass I have. My plan is to mastic seal to glass and seal to body. |

Thanks all, sounds like butyl mastic is the go to. I did refit the old rubber as it was out and back in temporarily, but for the final I want to make sure, even with new rubber. |

There is also a specific silicone for windscreens but I have never used it nor pass judgement. |
