Post subject: | Third motion bearing retainer. |
I have assembled the main shaft and placed in casing. Have put both the first and third motion bearings in correctly. When I go to put the retainer on I have no shims fitted but there is a gap between the bearing and retainer. I have not measured it but it is visible. Is there a solution for this or will I need a new retainer? It is in a 22G1128 4 syncro remote case. Thanks Pete |

Hmmm, what bearings are you using? Where did they come from? You could mill down the face of the retainer to provide crush. I very much doubt another retainer will make the difference as the face is not a wearing part against the bearing. |

The bearings are SCH brand and came from a Mini spares shop ( I won't name them yet ) When I pulled the box down there were no shims but I didn't take any notice if there was a gap or not ![]() Will order another set of new bearings for a different supplier ( also different brand ) and see if that makes a difference. Also, does the double row bearing have the little spring steel circlip fitted to its outer shell? It limits how far into the housing the bearing can sit. Usually have to swap the old one onto a new bearing. |

Yeah, has the circlip fitted but on another forum there are some bad reviews on the SCH brand. So i'm going to order some more "brand name" ones from a different supplier and see if that makes a difference. Hi, SCH brand will never be my choice, if I have one, but I have not seen one dimensionally wrong yet. Compare the position of the groove in both of your bearings. If its the same them , and the original was RHP, then something else is wrong. I have. not had a gap where you are talking about, and I have been involved in 100s of rebuilds. Never throw out old parts. You need to compare old and new. Never assume a new part is correct. cheers Lindsay Siebler |

Cheers Pete I was trying to think why there was a gap - as if the bearing was too far into its housing. The original bearings were mostly RHP brand, but, about 2000, something happened to the company and they stopped producing them. There was a shortage for a while until a supply came from Germany. Eventually RHP reintroduced them. RHP are still 'Made in England' if you can believe the box. |

The retainer has a 45 degree chamfer near where the retainer contacts the bearing. If the 3rd motion bearing spins in the gearbox case it can weardown the retainer. resulting in no contacy with bearing. I wld suggest comparing your retainer to another one. |

Hi all, Quick update, replaced SHC bearings with RHP and problem solved. Next time I will make sure to stay away from SHC brand. Thanks for all the help. Cheers Pete |
