Post subject:  Mk2 1969 Brake & Clutch Metal Pipe Sizes

I am going to have all the metal brake and clutch pipes replaced (I do not have the originals to go by) but have been informed by my brake place that I need the lengths of each pipe. Can any one help here. I am going to bend them myself, can any one advise the best bender.
1. Brake Master cylinder to booster.
2. Booster to brake line.
3. Clutch Master cylinder to slave cylinder.
4. Have I left one out?

Are you running the original Lockheed booster or later VH44?

Hi, if you are in Melbourne I know where you can buy them off the shelf at reasonable prices if interested.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my Mk2 and I've made my own brake lines including these. I can give you internal lengths for the ones you have listed. I measure the length with a whipper-snipper nylon cord. Then allow for the flares at each end. I used to just bend the pipes around things in the backyard like the Hills Hoist (good for several different diameters), pipes in the vice etc. 3/16" tubing is fairly easy to bend so most bender options work OK.

Do you have the interconnect pipe from RH to LH front brake take-off around the front of subframe?

That would be handy Bill B, I am reusing the front pipe. Do you have any pictures of your pipes?

Have only made up new pipes for the rear subframe so far.

These are the old pipes from the engine bay. I will replace them eventually but can measure them easily.

Considering you don't have the originals to get length and the shape of each piece, it may be worth buying premade ones, like 'metungdan' suggested.
I used to get my local brake place to made up each pipe to length, then I bent them using the old one as a sample. In the end, their prices became very expensive so I bought my own flaring kit. If you don't expect to do too many other cars in the future, it might be economical to buy them premade and bent.

Bill B - Did you use the original pipe connectors?

No. Use new unions on new pipes. The pipes in the bottom photo I posted are the old pipes I removed from the engine bay. When I make up new lines I will use new unions.

I can vouch for Slacko as a maker of quality pipes for the Mini and at a competitive price.

He has access to the BMC/Leyland engineering drawings for most of the Mini brake pipes so you can be sure what he makes is as close to original as you will get. I used a full set of his on the restoration of my MK II Cooper S and found all the pipes fitted perfectly and only needed finger tightening to get into position with no extra bending or tweaking (then tightened by spanner of course).

Here's an example of the detailed drawing with exact measurements he works from. He has made jigs for all the pipes so he can replicate easily.
