My mini K radiator needs a recore, as I would prefer to keep the top and bottom tanks original, if possible.

Can anyone recommend a radiator repairer - preferably in Sydney western suburbs.
Thanks.

Bill,
I've not long spoken to the guy at Blacktown Radiators and while he certainly seemed to know what he was talking about, the quote to have mine done to the same as what your wanting was $800.

I'd be keen to know what other options you come up with.

One thought I had was to buy a new Miniport 2 core competition hi flow one @$300 and change out the top tank myself. I would however like to change the sides to keep the original screw fixings but not sure how hard this would be.

Cheers
Ian

Thanks for the replies.
Seems to be more difficult than I expected.
An $800 quote sounds like they didn't really want to do the job but if you said Yes, they're still in front!
Have already approached Natrad at Smeaton Grange who tested the old radiator. He was supposed to give me a quote for a recore but never got back - seemed a bit 'uninterested'. The good thing about Natrad was they use Adrad cores which are 3-row even though all new Adrad radiators come 2-row only.
Will try to get a quote from Blacktown and Natrad.
After that it looks like Wodonga or Woonona!

Yes. Prefer the original look rather than alloy ones for instance. There are still a variety of new ones that look like originals available too.

I've used Blacktown radiators several times but he's getting expensive. No wonder people are fitting yum cha alloy ones instead.
Unless it's a real Aussie Cooper S I'd use a Minispares 2 core.

When I get the chance, I have a few old original radiators here that I am going to see if I can remove the top tanks of. I suspect that removing and fitting will not be too difficult, however it's the damage that is done when heat is applied to melt the solder. I am unsure how the core is held to the top and bottom plates.
I will also need to look at making a pressurising devise so as to test them. Any idea what a Max pressure will be.

our radiator caps open at 13psi, I reckon you'd want double that for safety margin

Bill, give Phoenix a ring. I've had a few radiators done by them over the years though it has changed owners in the last 5 or so years. I'm pretty sure the guy who owns it is in my local car club, looking at the facebook page he still does lots of old cars and recoring. I'd be surprised if he won't help you out, but if he won't deal with freight for you then I don't mind helping

I'm sorry I can't remember, I thought it was a fair bit at the time but they also made it a triple pass and the highest fin count and perforated fins, I was worried about cooling on my conversion, hadn't been hot at all so I'm happy.

Thanks again for the updates from everyone.
So far I have again contacted Newrads in Smeaton Grange (near me) for a quote. He seemed more 'interested' this time and more prepared to talk and share information. He hasn't got back to me yet with a quote as he had to check suppliers and prices.
I know Adrad supply the bare core which has 3 rows of tubes and same fin count, as per original mini K and, I think, S. I have compared the two original radiators and cannot tell what differences there are, other than the Newcell part numbers.
Will also follow up on the South Coast, Blacktown and Phoenix (thanks Simon K for your offer).
