Post subject:  Wheel offset advice
G'day team. New mini owner. 1968 Morris Cooper S.
I live in the ACT and when having it inspected today was told that the wheels are the wrong offset and hence failed the inspection. The car has a flare kit and currently has 165/60R12 71H Yokohama on 12" x 5" rims.
I am happy to replace the rims but not sure what offset I need. Any advice appreciated.

Also in the ACT.
Where did you get the inspection?, for full rego or historic?
I’m surprised that they would consider that as a reason, without knowing the exact wheel you have on.

What is the wheel and is it a dirty poking out offset?

Do your homework and politely challenge these idiots!

BTDT.. several times.. but not with wheel offset.

Based on my experiences, I would suggest that incorrect wheel offset may not be the real problem. Did they actually take the wheel off the car and measure it? You may have a wheel problem..or maybe just the wrong tyres.

I'd take a bet they just looked at the car and decided that the tyre sidewall pokes out a bit past the edge of the flair.... probably like pretty much 90(+)% of Canberra Minis.

In the absence of photos or any other info we're doing a lot of "supposing" here, however...

Originally MK I Ss were designed to wear 145 tyres ... and even these were pretty marginal. So much so that SA demanded that all Ss would be fitted with wheel arch extensions (which became standard on all Ss when the MKII was released). When we upgraded to 165 tyres the margin became even more marginal :)

IMHO you have two options. Get a copy of the regulations and argue that their interpretation is incorrect. (I have been successful with this approach). Or (the easiest way) - borrow a set of S wheels (I'll bet there are a few hanging around in the local club - you are a member??), get you paperwork done then revert to your original set up.

As he has 12" wheels, does he also have 8.4" discs?
No enough information (or photographs)!

Thanks for the replies. The tyres sat beyond the rear flares by approx. 1/2 an inch where the front sat beyond the front flares by approx. an inch. Have swapped the wheels over with a mate today now they sit inside the flares. Hopefully this satisfies the inspection on Monday.
I have attached a pic of the front wheel before the swap.
Will let you know how I get on.

Although he mentioned the offset, the actual reason for rejection was that the tyres sat beyond the flares.

I’d get a set of the nice Aussie spec flares - they are the best choice for a Cooper S

Of course the simplest solution is to spray a bit of cardboard blue and tape it under the arch ... just so it sticks out far enough o cover the tyre. This does work better with the proper S arches because you can tape the plastic trim to the outside....

and the weirdo's "working" in the ACT anti-car authority will still knock you back because some tyre can still be seen...meanwhile, the hot rodders roll around with tiny or no guards at all with impunity...NOT TO MENTION! EDIT: its is common knowledge that these numptys operate from a "bible" and have been doing so for decades...if you are unlucky enough to own a car that had a comment added to the "bible" decades ago...the numptys immediately react when you bring your car in for rego. Come to think of it, it is probably now the newby numptys taking action, just because it was written in the "bible" all those yeards ago...disgusting behavior :roll:

Will be ordering a new set of mags soon so I don't have the same issue next year.

Your car does not need an annual inspection.

The poster has not said that the inspection was undertaken at Hume. It may well have been one of the approved authorised inspectors. There are 94!
