Hi All,

Just took the mini for drive and noticed the oil light suddenly come on.
Pulled over to check and oil was just pouring out from behind the starter motor.

Its hard to see exactly where because there is oil everywhere but and ideas as to cause? And where could it be leaking from??

Could be from the pipe that goes from the block to the filter, given you’re saying behind the starter. Or the oil pressure spring housing.

If a breather is blocked it may be blowing the dipstick out, alomg with loads of oil.

I did check around the dipstick but its clean there. I just did an oil change too but around drain plug and filter was fine. I will try get pictures tomorrow but its tricky being behind the starter and also the coil is sitting above the starter.

My guess is its the oil relief valve or could it be block to gearbox gasket?? Or oil pressure sensor?

What could cause this though? It must have built up too much pressure somehow.

if you have an oil pressure gauge then I'll bet the copper tube has broken, they're pretty fragile

Don't have an oil pressure gauge so not that.
I had another look today and its not the pipe from filter to block, its under that. So either oil pressure switch or the relief valve. Couldn't see much and couldn't get a picture that would help anything.

Its parked up a fair way from home so will go back with some tools in a couple days and move the coil/starter and get a better look.

Tow it home before someone exchanges your wheels for bricks.

over the xmas break I had my oil pressure sender split and leak oil over the starter motor.

With the front of the car placed on jack stands, start the engine and have a look from under neath to see where the oil leak is. A replacement oil pressure switch cost me $14 and about 20 mins work.

Good luck and never climb under any car whist only supported by a jack.

Thanks for all the tips, the car is parked in a safe place (wife's work) so not worried about it.

I have ordered a new pressure switch and relief valve washer, and will head back with tools when the parts arrive.
