Post subject:  Fuel level sensor

Hi all,
I have just tested the two sensors I have to see which one I should use in my 66 Mk1 Cooper S with the voltage regulator., The resistance readings were inconsistent. By wriggling the float arm the resistance would come and go.
I opened them up and adjusted the tension on the wiper arm. Now I get the maximum and minimum values, and other resistance values across the operating range, mentioned in another post.
There isn't any obvious sealer or gasket, by opening them up have I potentially allowed fuel to fill the box containing the resistor?
Are they supposed to run wet, or dry?
After all the time and money invested I really don't want a fire or tank explosion, especially if my insurance company considers my actions contributed to the fire.

Thanks in advance Stewart
