Post subject:  Diff side covers - oil leak
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me, I’ve got oil leaks coming from the diff side covers. Drivers side is worse than the passengers.

I’ve already replaced the gasket on the drivers side once, the leak seems to be coming from where the reverse detent spring is.

Just curious to see if anyone has any recommendations/tips/tricks - was going to try cutting my own from gasket paper, but I noticed Minisport sell a “genuine” gasket.

So wondering if this may help the issue? Not keen on going mental with the gasket goo, but if it stops the leak....

Also mindful of making sure the gasket isn’t too thick to cause other issues.

I used a thin layer of Loctite MR5923 to seal most of those gaskets and it's worked pretty well so far. You might cause issues if you change the gasket thickness as it changes the pre load on the diff bearings. It’s definitely coming from the side cover and not the output/pot joint seal?

Tim, yep definitely the side cover - you can see it weeping from around the reverse detent spring area on the drivers side. The other seals are all fine.

And that's what I was worried about by changing the gasket thickness. Think I will order some of the "genuine" ones and use your suggestion as well.

There's an O ring in there if it's a rodchange box.

Yep - that is definitely in there Doc, made sure of it when I changed the last gasket. I’ve got a spare so will throw that in as well.

Watch the ear on cover isn't cracked or bent.
And like said above the thick gaskets stop the O ring from sealing. I would make a gasket to cover the ear too.

My 2 remote boxes have NO side gaskets, just Permatex anaerobic gasket maker. No leaks and far less shims needed.
Loctite 515 or 518 work too.

The drivers side cover is brand new, the old one had a lot of pitting on the gasket face, so I decided it was better to replace it.

I’ll check the o-ring is sealing properly against the cover and take note of your suggestions. I think the last gasket covered the ear as well.

Frustrating as it’s the only leak (at the moment anyway!).
