Just mated the gearbox and engine. Started turning the crankshaft by hand to see if all is well. Then after 1 & 4 pistons went down and 2 & 3 pistons came up there was a sudden stop and the 2 middle pistons stuck half way.

Any ideas?

What gearbox case do you have? Some of the early ones didn’t have clearance for the long stroke 1275

Did you install the distributor drive spindle? It might have fallen out

I took out the distributor drive spindle.

I guess I'm going to remove the gearbox to see if I can see any problems.

Found it guys. A trick for old players. I changed the oil filter housing to a spin on housing and used bolts that were too long and these intrude to far into the block not allowing the crank to turn. Good to find this out before going too far into the build. WHAT A DUFFER.

That is a good thing to make note of for the future for me!

Use sealant( like Permatex #3 )on the threads of the bolts otherwise oil will leak up the threads to the outside
Studs are normally used as they seal when they bottom out
