I’m looking at installing a HiLo setup and replacing the cones as well and am after recommendations on both.
Vehicle is a 68 Deluxe with a 1275 and is a performance orientated Road car.

I have seen that Readspeed manufacture HiLo’s does anyone have experience with these?

Regarding the cones what have people been using re dot vs standard?

Appreciate any advice.

Readspeed has his Hi-Lo cones CNC machined here from billet alloy. They are much better quality than the Indian made sand cast ones previously available here from UK.

Karcraft in Sydney does the same.

I have fitted both brands over the years.

Kev, I think you find it a bit short sighted to suggest there are only "2" kinds.... (Matt Rs +"the Indian made sand cast ones previously available here from UK..".

Minispares does 2 kinds (Original Rippspeed units + budget option..) Minisport does their own ( didn't check if they have options). With Matts that makes 4 or 5...

I have 2 sets of (unbranded) cast alloy units .. cruder than Ripps version... but they work ... (or at least they used to...)

I've read the sales blurbs about design features but unless you're going to pair them with brand-new OEM quality cones, big budget shocks etc etc I would suggest price is a good measure - with more expense not really buying you much...

I will look into the Reedspeed option along with new cones.
I noted that Reedspeed have 3 options of Hilo’s, standard ride, softer ride and firmer ride. I’m thinking that the firmer ride may suit my requirements best.

Talk to Matt Read before buying, his advice is good.

Hi Ian,
I was comparing to the cast cones imported and sold years ago by a supplier here. The 1/2" hole for the knuckle pin was very inconsistent in size. From press fit to loose as.
I assisted them sourcing billet ones here.

All to do with the shape of the hilo where it meets the cone. This effectively changes the rate of variation of the variable spring rate designed into the shape of the cone by Moulton. If you compare some of the hilo platform shapes to the orignal fixed height trumpet platform shape, you can see that they are wildly different. Most hilo manufacturers do this for ease of manufacture, rather than do any specific design criteria around the spring rate. This varies again when combined with different cone material specs and cone shapes that are available (e.g. smootha ride cones) - another can of worms altogether. Rubber springs have inherent damping and that can also change the variation in spring rate depending on the material. Many of the hilo designs you see that claim to provide stiffer or softer rides have been arrived at by trial and error rather than calculation.

I would advise you call Matt at Readspeed and give him your requirements to make sure you get the right result, as he was intimately involved in the design process. Likewise contact any of the other suppliers, but Matt is the manufacturer of his own, whereas most others in Australia are resellers of other manufacturers products, so rely on their own experience fitting that manufacturers items or the advice supplied by that manufacturer.
