New paint job. Is there a neat method to how to install those horrible chrome and felt trim clips without scratching paint ? Especially the barbed ones. When I pulled various chrome parts off there are 2 rust lines where the clips bit into the paint.

You might be worrying too much regarding the rust potential of the barbed clips. I realise they look as though they will cause terminal damage but they don't seem to create much.
I am renovating/restoring my 1970 mini after last repainting it in the late 1980s. There is very little rust damage where the barbed clips were used to hold moulds or cover strips on.
This is one of my mini's front external seam after 30 years of use, mostly as a daily driver. I painted the body and seams first and added the cover moulds afterwards, using the normal barbed clips. There is a trace of rust where the barbs scratched the paint, but nothing that can't be sanded out. The other seams are almost rust free, too.

The worst corrosion I have found in my cars is not where the barbed clips are used, but around the door/window flanges where the pinchweld or window seals hold moisture against the metal and allow moisture to creep between the panel seams and start corrosion.

Fair point, and the doors that had the rust tracks were original paint so likely 54 years since the clips were installed.

I'm just sensitive given the work and $. Its inevitable that there will be a scratch - i will just be as careful as i can and take my time.

Are you talking about the seam covers - the ones on each corner of the body?

If so, I've just been through this exercise with my resto and have some suggestions that may be of help.

Just going through fixing chrome strips, etc to newly painted doors.
Doors were hung and glass installed yesterday.
The job always causes much trepidation for me.
Things I do:
Tape any areas that could sustain damage, especially near the ends of the strips.
Make sure I have the correct type and number of clips.
I coat the clips in vaseline.
Cover the door with a towel.
Carefully applied judicious use of a nylon headed mallet.
Hope like heck.
Still have LH door to do and fit door handles.

Yes, it was the chrome trim, the body shop fitted the painted seam strip.

Tape and some vas, ok that's a good tip. The doors aren't fun, last time I did a drivers door it took me about 3hrs. At least I took photos pulling these ones down, so will just reverse order.

cgo said use a nylon head ,mallet it might be ok. Best thing to use is a 80mm length of timber pine is ok radius the ends ,tape the strip ,gently tap the timber, the timber spreads the load as it is 80mm long. I can do them with no damage to the strip, also apply some grease around the door where the mould fits. Most of these moulds have some damage as a rubber mallet has been used at an incorrect angle ,The timber is also used to remove the moulds or stainless strip. Also the seam strip is now adhered to the body to prevent paint damage and the strip does not show where the clips are when you look close. Really the doors are easy to do if you take care .Good Luck Also only hit the top edge of the strip, nearly forgot to tell you.

Getting back to the original post, does anybody got a good method of getting a new outside window rubber onto the chrome strip clips- they seem too thick to get in... do I need to open the barbed clip part a bit or bash the crap out of the window rubber to get it in?

The original rubber, looks like HYA2790, has 4 recesses where the clips are fixed. The new rubbers I purchased did not have these thinner regions. I used a Stanley knife to trim some of the inner rubber to allow me to fix the clips.

Thanks...reproduction parts are definitely work! Did you put the rubber into the clips when the chrome strip was already on the car?

I attach the outer waist seal to the chrome strip before attaching this unit to the door, using 4 x 34G939 clips, the clip on the left in photo. The clip on the right is a HYA1511, I believe 2 of these are used, I have disassembled doors with 3. These clips fix the chrome strip below the quarter window rubber. I fix them to the door and tap the chrome strip over them while fixing the chrome strip and waist seal unit to the door. Hope this makes sense.
