Hi there, I am trying to identify my mk2 cooper s chassis number as the adr plate and radiator shroud have been removed. Body number is 2/06 2264 and the vehicle was registered in new south Wales.

Cheers

I take it that the number you quote is stamped in the rain channel? Do you have an engine number?

The number is behind the master cylinders which i believe became the new location from the drain channel , the car has the engine number 9fxey54332. Though i may belive that is not the original engine. The car has all cooper s features e.g fuel breather hole under passenger seat, front diagonal brace, spot welded twin fuel tabs. And rivet holes where the adr plate was

The body stamping moved to the firewall around June 1970.

Your car would most likely have started its life as a Dec 1970 MK2 S between YG2S4 2750 - 2780. Unfortunately because the chassis number and ADR plate are now missing the car cannot go back to being a genuine MK2 S. There is no way of directly matching a body number to chassis number.

Its identification may have been fitted to another car like a Mini K. This usually happens when a shell is beyond economic repair from accident damage or rust. And the repairer is to lazy or cheap to replace all the panels separately. But this practice is illegal.

Another reason would be if the car was stolen and they removed the 2 items that would ID the car and resell the rest of the car.

If you have the old rego number then a FOI request may help if it was registered after they went to the newer system in the 1990's???

You may get lucky if someone has the body or engine number listed on their own database. However the engine number is a replacement from early 1970. I don't have it on any of my lists.

Hi there, the car was stolen back in the day and engine was removed/stolen, and was restored in the early 2000s, all the panels on the car are original, was just hoping there maybe a log of body and chassis numbers somewhere.

Thanks for the help

No log of body numbers sorry. Any cars identified by factory documents were by their chassis number and they have been incorporated into the register we now have on here.

I looked at a car in this situation about 10 years ago... no compliance plate and no radiator shroud... it was really cheap for a Cooper S, but too expensive for a lot of Cooper S parts which is what it really was
