G'day. Looking to install a sucking fan on the outer side of the radiator in a round nose, I don't really want to use those plastic poke through the radiator attachments. I'm looking for some pictures or ideas of how to actually mount the fan to the radiator. In addition does anyone have any opinions on Spal or Davies Craig fans? Alloy Radiator if that matters. Highest flow rate is important. I found the 10" fans were disappointing so I've used an 11" fan from Ashdown Ingram (over 1100cfm and less than half the price of the Spal 10") on the outside of the wheelarch with the inner 'fins' cut away for a clear flow path. Radiator is sealed to the wheelarch with rubber. |

I used a Spal slimline 10" fan primarily because out fit without modification to the car, it fits incredibly well and is a right fit in the radiator shroud so much so I'd suggest you could if you wanted just push out in there! I've nothing bad to say about it but as mentioned they are more expensive as far as cfms go the pdf says about 850cfm mine is thermo switched and doesn't stay on very long but whilst cooling a 1275 it isn't an A series. I'm also using a custom 3 pass high fin count radiator but in the standard mini place. Great info fuzzy. Thanks. My original plan was to attach the Thermo fan to the radiator using some sort of bracket. So did you mount the SPAL fan into the wheel arch in the position you have it showing in the image? Cheers |

Cheers I don't suggest you mount it to your radiator as when the engine moves it will try to rip the electric fan or the shroud or both off! Yeah mine is mounted inside the shroud, I just pulled slightly on a couple of the grills for a little bit of clearance, but mine is also mounted to the radiator as my radiator is not mounted to my engine, mine is an engine conversion. Nissan Cg13de. The flat side sections might allow you to mount it to the shroud or a couple of metal brackets or zip ties would probably work! |

I'm using the highest power version of Spal 11". 1100cfm or something. A slight shave of the plastic fan shroud and it fits tightly in the metal rad shroud (fins removed). I have it mounted to rad but I have 4 or 5 engine steadies. I will probably change to mount the rad to the body (not engine) in the future for ease. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

If the engine fan is removed, i wonder if airflow would be increased by modifying the mount/shroud that encircles the engine fan, at least the front portion. |

I have cut large slots in mine to increase air flow. It definitely helped. But I will try removing the removable rad shroud when mount the rad to the body. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

I don't really want to remove the fins at the rear going into the wheel arch. If I mount the fan on the wheel side of the "fins" I think it'll loose too much efficiency not being sealed up snug. Seems the fins are an issue. |

There are some slimline ones that people have squeezed between the rad and the fins. But they move much less air than the beefier ones so I'm not sure how much better it'd be. You could experiment, a slim Davies Craig isn't very expensive.If I mount the fan on the wheel side of the "fins" I think it'll loose too much efficiency not being sealed up snug. When thermofans were fitted to rovers they were mounted from under the wheel arch inside the guards. The original guard vents / fins remained in place. Those units just had a shroud around the fan so that the full area of the radiator had to pass through the fan. |
