Post subject:  A Clunking Issue! Any advice?
Mini number six for me :D A 1975 1100, I took her for her maiden drive today and have a clunking issue!

So, driving along and when coming off the accelerator a noticeable clunk! Sometime a single clunk other times a double clunk! Worst in second gear. If I ease off the accelerator gently it doesn’t occur.

Initial thoughts, engine mounts. The bottom mounts look new the top mounts look ok. Certainly no movement if I manual try and move the motor. Could it be a subframe issue?

Also have a clutch issue, won’t go into first with engine running so have to shut down select gear, start up then drive off. It bites really early. Have tried adjusting clutch to no avail!

Any and all advice greatly appreciated :D

Check the 2 hub nuts are tight. 60 ft lb for drum brake hubs, 150+ for disc brake hubs.

Check all the pivot points for the clutch. If every join has a little play it adds up to a lot for the clutch travel.
Also would be worth checking the subframe bolts for the clunk.

A torn rear engine mount at the end of the gear change remote housing will let the engine rock.

Check the travel of the pushrod coming out of the clutch slave cylinder. Should be around 19mm for normal operation.

Barely 10mm travel! Changed the slave and replaced master cylinder while I was at it. All good now, Thanks Bill :D

I've experienced clunking on a hydro car especially when moving from reverse to forward.
I cured this by adding a little more taper to the splines on the driveshafts.
I think over the years the splines swear a grove inside the yokes.
