Not sure I should be responding to this question..... My '66 mini has both hinges with the outer swage bulge facing RH; '69 has both with bulge facing LH. Personal preference of the tool setter on the press? |

Obviously there were 2 press tools in use. One opposite hand to the other. If dimensionally the same they didn't think it mattered...! |

The hinges on my 70 S are the same as Bill's, both with the bulge facing out on the passenger side. The engineering drawing for the hinge assembly (part HYA3806) confirms that there was only one version of the main component (part HYA3562), not mirror images to suit left and right. This would make sense as the bulge is simply there to strengthen the bar and having symmetrical items for left and right with different part numbers was obviously not worth the effort and expense. Going by cooperess images it appears the bar was made with the bulge on either side during the manufacturing period, even though the drawing shows one specific side. Hhhhmm ... mine came out of a 64 Oz 850 parts car (presumably installed in the factory) and the convex side (the bulge) protrudes towards the drivers side.... My 63 (UK) S has the opposite with the top of the bulge on the passenger side.... the 76 Clubbie has the flat bracket. Interestingly all have the (welded in) studs facing inwards. So even if they only made 2 pressings (early and late) they assembled different left and right brackets before installation in the cars... Cheers, Ian |

Cheers, Ian You'll see in the drawing that the part was approved for release into production on 26/3/65. The letter Y in the second position of the part number prefix means it is an Australian sourced part. Prior to that a UK part was used on all Oz Minis. You can see the UK part number 14A7246/7 in the drawing, which is the same part number that appears in the early Oz Mini parts books. So while the dimensions and material used would be the same the manufacturing of the UK and the Australian part my have varied slightly in terms of the location of the depression. This would explain the difference cooperess identified. |

Where a part to be sourced locally is effectively the same as the UK equivalent the UK drawing was routinely copied. BMC Australia had all the UK drawings for the Mini in its drawing office. I don't know why the part was manufactured differently. May have been intentional or accidental. Just checked my 68 S. The hinge brackets welded to the underside of the bonnet are handed and they align with the inner edge of the bonnet hinge pin brackets. So the hinge has to be attached to the bonnet from the outer side and the hinge bolts have to be pointing inwards towards the centre of the car for it all to align properly. The hinges on my S have the depression on the LHS for both hinges. There is always something else to learn about our beloved Minis. RonR |
