If you are worried about not enough pick-up orifice...you could cut 2-4 longitudinal slots say 1/2 inch long or so

I received this centre oil pickup recently and just unwrapped it to find that the pipe is a long way down the mesh. Attachment: A55E45DD-F387-485D-A0CC-2194D41A3F77.jpeg Is the mesh soldered on. If it is I can unsolder it and then either cut the pipe shorter or solder the mesh on closer to the end. Attachment: AC8D1298-D5EE-41D0-A3A3-1A2D66F66A94.jpeg As you can see there is plenty of room for the mesh to go further to the left. If I cut the pipe it really won’t be a “centre pick up”. Advice please ? Phil |

Leave it Phil, they work fine as is. If you lengthen the pipe it'll reduce the mesh area. But... You need to bend it forward so that the idler gear selector arm clears it when in reverse. Otherwise it wears a hole in the mesh. Select reverse and see!! I put it in the vice with soft jaws and spread the top bend a little. |

The old ones were cut away at the bottom but minispares changed the design years ago. Some say the old ones were better, but I've run both for road and found them fine. Apart from my rebending comment above. |

I wasn’t going to lengthen the pipe but move the mesh off the pipe further to give a greater surface area to the mesh to reduce the potential for blocking. I actually have one of the old angle cut ones but the mesh is shagged. Attachment: A3E6A1DE-404E-4842-A5C9-D98CE68433F5.jpeg Also the bracket on this is also bent and the weld is broken. I had to do lots of adjustments to the shape of the Minispares pipe to get the flange to sit properly on the gearbox face and also go through the hole in the web of the box. Then had to bend the bracket that secures it to the old support mount in the box as well. I’ve ensured that the mesh clears the reverse lever and gears. One would think they would have a decent jig to bend and then weld these together in  Is the mesh only soldered onto to pipe? |

I pulled the mesh off one once and replaced it. Soft soldered. Don't use a gas torch, you will overheat the mesh. Hot air gun works well. |

I removed the screen by heating the pipe with a blow torch till the solder was soft and slipped the screen off. Tinned the pipe about 15mm closer to the end and slid the screen on and added a bit more solder. Cool job. I had a box once where I had to file out a fin in the web where the pipe goes through. |
