Post subject: | Head Gasket |
I am back into minis,I now have a 1967 deluxe. Today I replaced the head gasket (composite type) and I noticed a slight water leak at each end of the head. The leak stopped after the engine warmed up.I did not use any sealant on the gasket. Question is should I re torque the head again tomorrow. The gasket set I used was HYL3610 from minisport. Thanks all. |

Yes, definitely retension the head and reset valve clearances. Do this with a cold engine. |

Hi, sorry Stibbsy, but I do beg to differ on cold head. Retension a cast iron head hot , and an alloy head cold To retension, release pressure in the cooling system ( could be under pressure as is hot ..caution) tension bolts in the order recommended in the workshop manual, or starting in the centre work your way evenly outwards Undo the bolt you are tensioning by at least half a turn, and then bring it up to the required torque in one movement If you just tension a bolt without undoing , you will just get the breakaway torque, and thats not enough reset tappet clearances when finished .... easiest way to do that is subtract the number of the valve down (open) from 9 , then adjust that one Dry threads on bolts also generally read high so lube them Cheers Lindsay Siebler |
