Has any one done a comparison of improvement obtained when using Ramflo air filters to the standard Min unit, specifically that as fitted to Cooper S.
I am trying to determine whether fitting Ramflo will add to my performance in light of the modifications I have made to the engine.
Your comments would be appreciated.

Just heavily edited my post to keep on track:
Strange you should ask this as I have just been doing some research on this too. From what I’ve discovered over the past few days hunting through all the claims of great gains etc. from air filter manufacturers and resellers, there seems to be little evidence that any of the “sports” air filters make any significant power gains / difference. There was one mini dyno test that I found that gave best HP results from a modified stock system (had additional holes drilled in the assembly).

The results of a side by side dyno session comparing the alternatives would be interesting to see.

Not the comparison you want, but info may help.

I did a comparison on my 1412 stroker on GR's engine dyno.
45 Dellorto carby on a Warneford/Redline manifold.
It ran a Ramflo 400 series filter with a unifilter LNX400 oiled foam in.
HP and torque was the same, both with and without the foam in. So it didn't restrict performance.
The Unifilter foam is far more open than the standard Lynx foam.

Much of their claimed HP increase comes from just changing out a stock Airbox and going to an open filter. Most factory airboxes are designed to reduce dirt ingress and decrease suction noise. Looking at the filter flow themselves there may only be a slight increase on flow that wont show up on any dyno. The upside to many of the oiled filter elements is they can filter much finer particles and are re-usable.

They are not the answers I was expecting - very interesting reading. In the short term I may stay with the standard filter arrangement.

How modified is your engine?

hmm.... I disagree with that first part, oiled are reusable yes, but paper is still the best filter material for filtration and dust loading capacity.

not of a car on a dyno, but empirical back to back air filter testing -> https://www.project200.com.au/dm-iso5011/

Timmy the mods are
- bored +0.060", balanced
- head ported & polished, std valves, 1:1.3 roller tipped rockers
- Mini Spares Fast Road Cam
- LCB extractors ceramic coated
- electronic ignition, distributor remapped with timing set at 10 BTDC

Can not remember any further mods.

If you want more air flow from a filter you either make the holes bigger or make the filter larger.

Ramflows work by making the holes bigger.

My engine dynod exactly the same figures with and without a K and N filter. (~120 bhp)

Also since we're on a related subject, see Vizard's data on the different angles and radii of inlet aperture and the effect that has on flow. That is to do with the filter housing etc more so than the element itself.

HI John
If you are running twin 1 1/4 SU carbies the best set up I have found is the original cooper S set up, it was a lot better than some of the after market air cleaners.
One thing that was interesting was that it made more power with the air cleaners in than it did with out them, this is because it allows the engine to pull still air from the air cleaner.
A really good example of this was when I was doing HQ engines for Peter Hopwood, on the dyno with the air cleaner on but no filter the air would rush in at high speed and straight across the intake to the carburettor and stall the engine for about 2 seconds till the high speed air slowed down then it pick up again.
With the Cooper S set up it has quite a big area to pull the air from with the alloy adaptor that is bolted to the front of the carburettor, it then has a ram tube leading up into air cleaner :) very well thought out it's funny how BMC got things right.

Here's an interesting read regarding standard filter cases and K&N filters.
