G'day,

Trying to decide on colours for my 63 850 and need some help with the roof options please. The car was originally all Saxon green and I'm going for a similar colour but a few shades darker (nowhere near as dark as BRG though) and a bit more body to it if that makes sense. The panel shop where I'm getting it done has mixed up quite a few samples for me and sprayed them out on metal so I can see what they'll look like on the car instead of just going off a colour sample. What I've found so far is that the colour samples are nothing like the finished paint, the made up tint before adding thinners and spraying out is darker than the final spray out and colours on the computer are nothing like those in real life. Makes deciding on a colour a bit more time consuming but worth it in the long run I reckon.

Now that I'm going with a darker shade of green, I've decided to go with a white roof to help break up the overall colours a bit. From what I can gather by looking at the colours threads and the colour charts on this forum is that there were maybe 4 or 5 'whites' used on the roof.

1/. Nurburg white- code 2191. One website I read had this as being an MG / Healey colour??
2/. Norburg white - code 5269
3/. Togo white - code 8452
4/. Snow white - code 10080
5/. Old English white - code WT3. The new BMW Minis have this as Pepper White.

I'm getting a few sample pots done tomorrow of the whites but would like some idea of the Norburg and Toga whites. I've seen a Pepper white Mini so have a fair idea of what that looks like - a fairly creamy white. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Toga white was a grey white but I may be wrong about that.

Cheers, Rocky

Hey Rocky,

My Landcrab is Toga white, and yes it is a greyey white, a linen white if that makes sense.

Ian

I have snow white. I picked it as it was slightly creamy, but to be honest it looks fairly white in reality.

Thanks Ian and Morbo. A greyish white might look ok with the green I'm going with as it has a bit of a grey tinge to it. Interior is grey as well.

I sprayed out some slightly off white paint I had (a Toyota touch up can) that looked creamy compared to stark white but then looks a bit too white against the green. Lucky I've got a spray painter who doesn't mind mucking around. He's into older cars and happy to work with me so I'm happy.

Cheers, Rocky

I’m doing a Clubman in Norburg white and it’s a greyish white. It seems to be greyer than Nurburg white. It’s worth a look if you want a grey white

Thanks Neil - I didn't know the difference between Nurburg and Norburg but do now.

I came across another white last night - Snowberry white. Code WT4 or 8341 I think. From what I can gather, it's not a creamy as old english. Picking colours is a challenge with so many variations even in finished cars. At a car show I went to, there were 3 Saxon green Minis all together. All re-painted in Saxon green using the same code but different paints and panel shops. All different colours though.

Cheers, Rocky

Mine is a mid-green with white roof - the green is similar to (or maybe is) Tamarisk and the roof is Crystal White. The white is fairly pure and with a very slight hint of grey.
As the previous owner painted the car I can not be sure if these are representative of the BMC/Leyland colours.

Car can be seen in this thread:

Cheers, Paul.

Crystal White (11572) is the other white used on the roof which is what I will be using. Depended on year by the looks. I found the old English white far too creamy

There are a few threads discussing this, this one also has a link to a full thread on colours.

This thread shows an original crystal white sticker used with a green body for reference

You are always going to get colour variations from different batches, brands and painters.
Like you, modern stark, clean whites look wrong as a turret colour on minis. The most stark white on minis I feel is Crystal White - good for a full body colour but doesn't suit as a turret contrast on most other body colours. Stay with any of those 'mirky' whites. Greyish whites often appear green anyway.
Have you considered a paler green for the turret to complement the main colour? It was a very common combination for the early Coopers.

2nd from Left is my Willow green with light green turret; 3rd is Tamarisk Green.

this ^^^

OR

have you thought about the roof painted body colour and having the roof wrapped?

I think white roofs are boring... minis look much better monotone - I'd only ever do a white roof to match what's on the ID plate

Thanks gents for your replies.

Paul - I remember seeing your thread and thinking what a nice clean car you've got. I'm going with the original 3 1/2" rims painted in silver with new stainless hubcaps. However, when I look at your car, the mags do look nice.

Andosoft and Bill - I got some samples made up today of the new BMW Mini Pepper white (=Old english white OEW) and a UK mini colour called Snowberry white. I don't recall seeing that colour before. Interestingly, on the referenced colour swatch when they went to mix it up it shows it as having a green tinge. It's way less creamy than OEW and when you put them side by side, the OEW looks a bit pinkish perhaps. I like the snowberry and will use it I reckon. I've made up 3 different green options that the panel shop is spraying out for me over the weekend. I'd narrowed my choices down to 2 - one is a bit bright while the other looks a bit dirtier in comparison. I've blended some ratios of the 2 with the aim of ending up with something in between.

Simon - What do you mean by wrapping the roof? I was originally going with the roof the same as the body colour as per original. If I was painting it saxon green, or a lighter shade, I'd definitely go with the same colour roof. It's only since I'm looking at the darker shades that I think a white roof would help break it up a bit. I've had some quite large metal pieces sprayed out and laid both the colour and white on the roof to compare them. They both look ok but I think the white does look a bit nicer. The plan at this stage is to paint the roof white and then paint the body. If it doesn't look right, we'll respray the roof in the body colour.

I've been mucking around with colours for the last month or so and will lock in something next week so it can finally get painted.

Cheers, Rocky

Would love to see a photo, please? The Deluxe I'm meant to be restoring has a bit of the original (I think) Toga White showing through.

it's quite popular these days to wrap a car in vinyl - not the kind of vinyl that was on the roof of cars in the 70's but a thin film that looks like paint. If it's a good option then talk to your painter about it, they'll might not do it but they'll definitely know about it

The benefit in your case is that if you're not 100% sold on a white roof, you could paint the car body colour and then wrap it if you change your mind... you can even buy a union jack wrap

I saw a Tesla wrapped in bright green yesterday

Thanks for that Simon. I have seen that. The panel shop that is doing my mini just had a toyota in there that had black vinyl put over the orange body. It was an ex QLD car and the stuff on the roof had cracked. The stuff on the bonnet was still ok and when they took it off, the paint underneath was still in good nick.
