| Post subject: | Where to buy steering rack tie rods |
The mini went for its annual pink slip on Saturday and failed because there is movement between the left tie rod and the end of the rack. Where can I buy all of the parts to replace the tie rod from ? I will need the tie rod, seat, spring, nut, lock nut etc. It’s a 62 850. Phil |

Are you sure the movement is in the ball/socket of the tie rod and not a worn rack damper allowing movement of the rack? In Aust'n racks the damper is a ring of felt wrapped around the rack to stop it moving up/down/back/forward inside the housing. It is on the LH side of the rack and when worn, can be mistaken for lose steering tie rod on that side. You have to feel through the rubber boot and get someone to turn the steering wheel to work out which bit is moving. Also, there were a few changes in early 1960s from UK to Australian rack units as well as to the tie rods fitted, so might be worth removing the rack to identify the parts needing replacing. |

Parts are rare for old UK or Oz made racks. The last Mini rack made here was the AYA6001, these are more robust and more parts available. These are a short version of a Morris 1100 rack, the rack bar inside is bigger diameter. However I've not seen their tie rods new either for many years. Usually these later racks just need them adjusted. Their lock nuts are still available. Ditto polyurethane hex rack bush, preload (wave) washers, boots, pinions and pinion seals. Matt Read in Brisbane keeps rebuilt ones. Filled with OIL not grease. This rack fits all Oz Minis 61-78. Manufacturer recommended gear oil. 140 or similar. Diecast on here knows original spec he worked at Cam Gears. Later racks got EP2? grease because Leyland said so. But with time the rack wears a track through the grease then no lube- and top bearing corrodes. Proper sloppy rack grease should work but that's not what they used. I've rebuilt many racks since 1970. I use 85/140 or 90/140. |

I’ve spoken to two parts suppliers and one mini repair specialist in Sydney and all have said it’s a rack replacement as spares for these are NLA. The repairer even said if parts were available, because the nut is swayed into the rack it’s a PITA to do institute and easier to replace the entire rack. |

You can buy new racks for Minis, but they are made in China and not repairable. Except for rack boots. I've not used them so can't comment on their longevity. |

As Dr Mini said, use oil not grease. Heaviest oil you can find 120-140. |
