I had a matic a while ago and enjoyed it enough.
Not that it was trouble free but it did go forwards
We had two growing up, did my driving test in one. Ours got along pretty well I seem to remember. We have one regular in Minis in the Gong (SteveOB) and it has absolutely no problem keeping up with everyone else. They had a bigger Carb as standard to make up for the some of the power loss from the auto box.
Great thing about the matic is you can manual shift thru all the gears.
A family friend who was a BMC mechanic with Austin and Larke Hoskins in this period was a great fan of the auto box as it was far better than borg warners but that owners abused it by driving in 4th (in manual) instead of D (auto). This apparently caused excessive slip and internal wear.
