We may be being a little unreasonable in all. They are good mufflers, and are built very well being specifically for the mini. Maybe we're a little spoilt :)

The Lukey promises to be a little more throaty, and that's the choice I hope a small vid with audio will demonstrate. There may be little in it.

On the Lukey, it doesn't look directional, the perforations look identical from either direction down the middle. Can anyone confirm it is bi-directional?

Very interesting.
I have the basic extractors and a 1 1/4" on an 1100 and it has a great note!
I'm looking at an exhaust upgrade soon and everyone has said a 1 3/4" With a single RC40.

Would this setup give me the throatless tones you speak of!?

Back in the day they were plain pierced holes and I don't think it mattered.
When we bought Barney the PO had put a 1-3/4" Lukey on (maybe was a different model) and the perforations were directional. With the muffler on backwards there was a noticeable power loss.

Try both ways before you weld pipes to it. :)

From memory the holes/perforations are straight in the tubing. Other brands like redback and berkley had a directional slot hole in them. With that particular lukey it shouldn't matter. Been 8yrs since I looked at one though!

Having another look, the perforations point toward the inlet or outlet depending on your perspective. Each end is a mirror image of the other, so I can mount it in either direction.

You want the perforations to point towards the tailpipe.
They should put a direction arrow on the damned things...

Yes, that's what I mean. No matter which end you look in, it is the same.
Each half of the perforations in the pipe look toward their closest end.

So it doesn't matter which way you mount it, it will be the same result.

Ah OK, the one we had on Barney all pointed the 1 way.

I have a new Lukey L-132 as well, not yet fitted. On the opposite side of the muffler to the Lukey logo on mine there is a directional sticker saying "ENGINE". I'll try and get a picture up later.

Mick, on yours the 'engine' - end would be where they've written the L-132 in texta.

Here in Canberra a single box RC40 won't pass the noise test for rego (or at least it wouldn't a few years ago).

Cheers, Ian

My Lukey L-132:

With directional label:

Here's the Lukey next to what I was told was the original factory muffler from my 1970 Mk2 Cooper S:

As you can see there is a big difference in the size between the two mufflers.

Can anyone confirm that the larger one is indeed the factory muffler? Does anyone have a known original to compare it to?

Appreciate any help on this.

There's no sticker at all on mine, but I can't see for the life of me how it differs.

I'll go with your sticker direction, but it may be arbitrary as the orientation of the Lukey might depend only on how the squares of material were presented to the final welder for completion.

It might be the sticker is arbitrary too, to prevent stupid questions at the front counter from the apprentice. Ha ha

I changed out the RC40 for the Lukey today, but not before attaching my Contour HD Camera to the hydro pipes facing the rear apron.I took it up the road for a blast before and after the muffler change over. It took about 30 minutes to change out including trimming a piece of 44 mm pipe to the right length.I used a piece of 44 mm pipe bent up with an exact 30 degree bend in the center and I trimmed it to suit.

The run is out of my place and up a really long steep climb up the range nearby, turns around and then home again. The Lukey sure does have a bark, that's apparent straight away. Still good inside the car, and much the same under high load, as in up the long hill nearby, just that it now has a growl to the exhaust that wasn't there before. Sounds good and I'm pleased.

This first video is the RC40

And this is the Lukey L-132
