Cooperess:

My understanding is sketchy as I don't have change details but based on information I've come across, using Ausdino's photos of 3 of these, the evolution is a bit like this:

- early remote gear levers used the 22G290 cup. As drmini says, some of these had a small spring fitted at the bottom of the lever to help reduce vibration. These seem to be the straight and chromed levers used on Cooper, mk 1 "S" and Deluxe (and maybe Elf and Hornet in UK)

- later Mk2 "S" and mini K had the bent lever for better ergonomics, painted black, thick distance piece and flat retaining plate to allow an extra internal dust boot to be held in place on the edge of the flat plate (that is what "Firefirey" would like to see remade). This could be an Australian design modification.

Larry's question has caused me to recheck what I've written in the Cooper S drawings book. The earlier retainer is actually part number 22A391 and is used in 997, 998 and Morris 1100 and early 1275. The later retainer 22G290 appears to have been introduced about August 1967 and bottom Australian bush. Unfortunately, some parts books show both retainers having the same part number 22G290. regards, Tony

And while we're on the topic of remote shifters, my magic wand shifter buzzes really bad at certain RPM and I've tried a few fixes. Looking at the prior posts in this thread got me to dig out some of my remote shifters and see if the later style top can be adapted to the 850 diff cover...

Remote gear lever at the top, 850 gear lever at the bottom & an 850 diff cover

Success! The remote retaining plate, spring and nylon split flange washer are a direct swap. I just need to find some correct length bolts and see how it is in the car

Unfortunately the nylon split bush at the bottom doesn't fit the magic wand setup as the ball on the bottom of the shifter is bigger, and the cup on the shift rod is smaller.

Could you make an oversized cup to fit?
Also I wonder how the shorter lever will work, maybe a bit like a quick shift or maybe a bit too direct.

I'll try this first and see if it helps with the rattle. I also have a dim memory that there was the sprung nylon cup at the bottom like item 10 & 12 in Doug's parts manual page

Apart from the obvious difference in total length, the magic wand is also a bit longer between the pivot balls, I don't think the ratio would work if you swapped them.
