Thanks BillB for your reply. I ended up making a Y lead for the earth wire to connect an existing bullet connector in the loom behind the speedo.

I think I ended up finding the original wire, it was a black wire with a spade at one end (motor) and a bullet at the other. I'll look at the steering column wires now you've mentioned that.

On my 1970 S the black earth wire connects to a red multi connector as part of the loom under the parcel shelf near the flasher canister. Green with yellow trace power wire connects to the ignition switch.
