It does say something that tyres manufactured in Japan, dragged by freighter across the top of Australia, through the Suez, landed, charged customs in the UK, transported to warehouses, distributed to retailers, package and express freighted around the world ends up being cheaper than from the tyre shop at the end of my street.

We did a water tour of the Hamburg port - 2nd largest container port in the world - the tour guide had a story for each country represented - for Australia she said that due to volume, economies of scale, automation, speed etc. bottles of wine from the Barossa were landed in Germany at a cost of 5 cents a bottle.

If you are buying from the US,Europe or the UK and they don't ship tp AUS there are companies that provide you with a local shipping address and then they reship.

Borderlinx is one in the US.

My local tyre place charged me a mere pittance to remove my tyres from the original steel wheels and to put them on my newly acquired alloys from the UK.
All they wanted was for me to take the car there from them to see the car with it new shoes on.

Cheers

I will believe it when I see it. The estimated cost of collection is horrendous.

I'm sure the government will pass that problem to the carriers.

Lets hope it doesn't happen.

Sorry to be a tad cynical Bob, but when ever has an ill thought out, to hell with the consequences, gummint money grab ever worried about "details" and consequences...

Its only when there is an outcry and people may not be re-elected that they suck back

So true.

Unfortunately the government is going to net billions in tax.

Happy New Year!

No it won't. It might be millions, but the cost of collecting those millions is likely to be $AUD 2 billion.
