Hi Winabbey,

Definitely not one of those. Maybe it's the Clubman type heater? Don't know never seen one. Hope to go to Bundoora on Sunday, maybe someone can ID it then...
Was definitely in my '70 and '71 K's and pretty sure the '69 had it also...

Winabbey has a tech drawing (AYG9344) that shows the clubman style heater was used on YDO4,5,6 from Jan 1971 to meet ADR15.

The plastic clubman style heater can be seen on a 1971 Cooper S in the bottom right photo

gtogreen,

That may well be it. Cant' make out the heater controls in that picture though. Are they on the RHS of the steering wheel? I could imagine one being factory fitted to a '71 K . But the '69 and '70 K's? The one in my Deluxe definitely came from one of those 2 cars...

Cheers

Michael

No mate, that could be the "beehive" type people have mentioned. Mine is larger with steel flexible branches that go up (behind the parcel shelf lining) to each side demister vent on the top dash rail where the ashtray sits... I'm guessing it is the clubman type? The hot water tap on/off valve is on the heater itself, i.e inside the car...

Here is a photo of the heater switches for the 1971 S with a clubman style heater. The left knob was for the heat control, Middle switch for the fan on off, Right switch for the Air Control.

The Matic heater was a factory option on later Deluxe and K, but back then, most Oz cars had no heater standard. There was a thriving aftermarket of heaters, demisters etc fitted by dealers or accessories shops. Beehive heater was fitted to many cars, as example.
We were tough back then, heaters were for wusses. :)

gtogreen, that's definitely the same control panel in the same location as on my cars. As said before, the heat control was a complete PIA to operate. The cable ran under the dash, behind the heater to the tap on the passengers side of the heater. I think too many bends and unfriendly control valve didn't help.
Can someone comment on how good/ efficient the Cooper S heaters are. Seems a much more user friendly design and solution (except for the crazy prices they go for!)
