Actually after refreshing my memory it is quite interesting how those regulators work.

One relay cuts the generator out when the revs drop low to prevent the battery driving the generator and turning it into a starter motor.
The other regulates the voltage by vibrating essentially at around the correct voltage, too high it cuts out, too low it cuts in which happens very rapidly. You should be able to see these relays operating if you remove the cover.

yep bulb is continually on, the battery was most deffo losing charge.

and so, I have replaced with new, the fuse box, the regulator and put the last generator back on, and . . . . .

the bloody ignition light is still on, so, back to the original question, I have a new generator and so how the **** do I get that pulley wheel off so I can put a brand new generator on to sort this once and for all?!?!

the new generator has a slight lip on the spindle so as to lock with a screw driver, yet the 3 others I have don't appear to have anything similar.

but hey, the horn works now ha ha ha

taaaaaaaaa for the advice

Are you having trouble removing the nut or the pulley?

I used an old fan belt wrapped round the pulley and clamped tight in a vice, then used a rattle gun to buz the nut off

If you're keen pull the generator apart and hold the armature in a vice (soft jaws?) then undo the nut the usual way.. Or else use your imagination or any of the above suggested methods..........

i had the battery not being charged, i thought it was the generator. but turned out to be the voltage regulator.
it was band new from the UK. I took it to an auto elec and he said it was faulty and would cost to investigate why. (cost me $20 for him to quote
i put in an old lucas one from a land rover, now working fine.

I ended up doing just that goodie, got him to test 2 old generators for me too, and they were both not working - so 3 out of 3 buggered!

Got the new pully wheel on, just put it all back, with new regulator and fuse box and all is as it should be, no light, horn works a treat too.

thanks all for the advice

now, what's next that needs fixing . . .
