I always put the pump in & check it turns OK before I fit the chain & sprockets. However, I make sure the cam sprocket slides nice on the key, I never hit it onto the cam with a bfh.
The only oil pump problem I have noticed recently is some new 1275A+ slot drive pumps don't have enough chamfer on the corner near the gasket. I had 2 instances where I had to make the chamfer bigger, the pump would not sit right on the gasket. So, it didn't prime.
