Morris 1100, you've certainly picked up the rarer colours. Out of interest...

Acacia and Moss Green are the only two colours I haven't been able to find details for either (have seen ~3 Acacia, but only one Moss Green)
Chartreuse - 1961, for cars roughly 3000-8000 (know of 7)
Driftwood - late '62/early '63, know of 3 cars around 20000-21000
Iceberg Blue - 1965, have only seen 1
Orient Red - 1961, one of the first four colours used on the 850, but only up to about car 5000 (know of 5).
Royal Red - 1965, again only seen 1
Slate Grey - 1964, only found 2

In contrast, from the cars I've found Shadow Blue and Saxon Green are by far the most popular colours.

David E, all the best for your material search. The grain may be the same as late 850?

850_Van, I will note that down thanks. There could easily be 850 sedans too, just have to find them!

Evan

I have a YMA2S1 Acacia ID plate.

Apologies in advance is the following is seen as information overload, but I thought there may be some data that is of use to mini_fanatic or others in this discussion.

The Service Bulletin mentions a couple of things of general interest:

  • The change from nitro-cellulose to acrylic paint at Morris 850 car number 4194
  • Berger being the primary supplier of paint to BMC during this period (paint suppliers to BMC varied over the years)
  • The list of colours used on all BMC vehicles 1959-61

The index pages from the 1962 and 1963 Berger Colour Manual are not currently in the Paint thread in the How To section but may be of interest. I have the subsequent pages for both years showing colour samples if anyone needs it.

Would you mind sharing the car number? To the nearest hundred or thousand is fine.
Just trying to also get a rough idea of when the colours were available by car number.

Thanks again for sharing the Service Bulletins winabbey, certainly an interesting read as always (never an overload).
I would be interested in seeing the colour samples for 1962 if you didn't mind. There's a couple of colours I can't find samples for - Aztec Turquoise and Sunburst Cream (as well as Orient Red, Araluen Blue and Inca Yellow from 1961).

Thanks minimac and mini_fanatic for the photos. The colour is different to what I imagined it to be

No worries,
Its YMA2S1 4689x and 8YUH 543X. I will probably get rid of it now I have stopped collecting anything other than Cooper S stuff.

1970minik, shame about the plate but great you got the books with it. I don't have any photos myself unfortunately, however Tony Self posted a great one on the VMCi Facebook page with two other 850s (Chartreuse in the middle) (here)

bruvy2002, thanks for sharing about your car, great to have definite confirmation on Moss Green. Is it still Moss Green?

Evan

Hi Evan,

Yes, still Moss Green with white roof. It looks to have had a bit of a touch up somewhere in it's life, but it's still all the same colour in and out. Interior has been completely redone (poorly) so no idea what it was originally. It will be stripped to bare metal and resprayed later this year (when I get some dollars!)

Acacia (I'm pretty sure I have seen an 850 in this colour but it isn't in my files)
Chartreuse (seen on Morris Major)
Driftwood (seen on Morris Major)
Iceberg Blue (seen on Morris Cooper)
Moss Green (seen on Morris Cooper)
Orient Red
Royal Red
Slate Grey

If they were used on the 850 they are indeed rare!

YMA2S1 7930 is Chartreuse - Do you want any photos of ID plates?

Sure! I'm always collecting photos of ID plates. I usually just steal them form the internet.
You can PM it to me if you like.

If you have any for the Australian Cooper or Cooper S, or ADR Compliance plates for the MK II S or Clubman GT I'd love to see them. They would be used to verify existing data or add new data to the Registers hosted on here. :)

If you are sending them to Morris 1100 then no need to include me as (hopefully) he will supply any we don't already have.

Thanks for the replies everyone, this is great.

The later 64/65 colours are appearing 'rarer' more than others, I assume because they sold less cars with the Van and Deluxe on the market?

If anyone has an original car in Aztec Turquoise I'd love to see a photo of it - never seen a complete car.

I have some sprayed samples of coral, orchid, rose mist, arctic blue, platinum, rheims blue, porcelain green, aintree green and sandalwood from when I was trying to decide what we wanted to do with our van.

Some of them can be seen in this thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=89806

Hi Doug, I have emailed you about 270 photos so I hope you ADSL is paid up. Can you pass them on to Morris 1100 as I don't have his email. You probably already have 265 of them on file. Cheers Brad

Just been thinking about this, I'd always thought 850s (and 60s Minis in general) were done in enamel?

From all the publications I've found, the prefix "1" for Colour on the ID plate represents 'Enamel'. I can only ever recall seeing "1" on 850s (as per the plates Morris 1100 posted), both before and after car number 4194.

I'm no way a paint expert, but I thought nitro-cellulose and acrylic paint are different to enamel? Am I missing something?
