Hi Kevin,
Now that's a good topic to get started on. Should they be wire or flat band or snail type etc.
This could develop a life of its own. I just hope NOT!

Regards

Hey guys, in my early life I threw away hundreds of those wire clips, bloody useless things they were! Guess who went hunting for some to make my engine compartment look right?

Oh yeah, and those Lucas original cup type battery cable ends. I had quite a job finding some of them too!

Hi Everyone,

Reviving an old thread here but it may be of interest to particular people.

I am in the progress of building my 66 Cooper S and needed some clips for the car.

Approached a guy to see if he could make some from a sample, as new ones are NLA and finding second hand ones are like...lol!!

Here what he has come up..very talented chap I have to say 8) Made his own punch and die set for the job.

Image

Original clip on the left (in spring steel), samples in mild steel on the right.

He will be making a small run of clips in spring steel shortly. If there is anyone out there who requires these clips too, let me know.

Cheers,
Fred

Hi,
I know of several genuine early 65/66 Aussie Cooper S that have two very small holes on the right side of the rear bulkhead where the right side vent clip should go but weren't ready in time from factory. These cars do not have vent tags under the rear parcel shelf. These cars also all have a small a on the engine block.
A 9/66 I know of, has vent clips and no parcel shelf tags. It has a big A on the engine block.
I'm not saying the "a" stamping has anything to do with the vent clips, just making note of possible dates when the engine stamping may have changed.
Would be interested in some vent clips.

Hi Gezo,
Yes, Mine is a 9 / 66 build, with holes only for the clips, & no tags under the parcel shelf, so perhaps this was the cusp of the welded tags being fitted? - The car had the clips until they were "misplaced" at it's first respray twenty six years ago.

Further to all of the above, I have just read an article from the Mini Mag, by Steve Dalton, Oct. 2003.
He is a very knowledgeable fellow when it comes to Mini's, & has gone to the trouble of supplying pictures as well.
The article states that the first 500 to 600 cars had no clips or tags on either the parcel shelf or the right side seat brace, & then up to about car number 2264 to 2300, there were no clips under the parcel shelf, but two spring steel clips attached to the right side of the seat brace. After this, the cars had spot welded tabs, three under the parcel shelf, & two on the right side of the seat brace, until the end of Clubman GT production.
Interesting eh?

Pretty sure "The Mini Experience" had some info on this subject in one of their Cooper S articles? Seems to agree with this info as I remember.....

Hi all,

If this article(taken from web) is a period English parts book image, It seems (as might be expected) that the clips were not particular to the Aussie Cooper S. See item 29. If so it seems odd that the first couple of hundred of Aussie Cooper S (as indicted by another article I have read) would have left the factory without them if they were actually available?? They appear to have come as part of a kit to install an auxiliary second tank in the UK mini's?? Don't know the date of this parts page, but I do know that on the Somerford Minis site, they list these clips as NLA. The plot thickens!!!

Hi all,

Just an update..these clips are for real...seeing they have been NLA for so long it might be hard to believe...

Some photos included of the first run still in need of tempering and so on..

Hello Freddo,
I'm also rebuilding an Aussie made early 1966 'S' (March/April) for the 2nd time. I have just read your post and need to check boot set-up tomorrow as I didn't know I had to worry about these clips.
I would like to contact you about this later, if that's OK.
Bill
