Not worthless, but not worthful.

Key magic number is 1275. But not everyone wants/needs the extra power, me for one would never go less than a 1275, unless I was desperate to have a car on the road, but not everyone is like me, I can see advantages, eg fuel use.

1275 bigotry
it may be the biggest and most powerful engine, but its not the best one.

998's are an excellent motor..
i think any good mini motor is worth a little bit just because its hard to find good ones 30 years on and rebuilding is so expensive.

(Cooper S) EN40B crank, double row timing chain, forged rockers, twin SUs standard, bigger valved head, more power, more torque.

Show me a better standard mini engine. I've never driven a small bore mini but I've been passenger in one, economy. But that's all I can see, Standard 998, won't even rev as good. I'm not talking modified, I'm talking standard.

When modified, which motor is better depends on how deep your pocket is.

<edit> Back on topic which makes it worth more, as I said, 998, not worthless, just not worth all that much, I got an 850 motor in the shed. Now that's worthless!!!

Cush it's dead.

The pistons are black LOL.

I've been thinking about cleaning it up enough to run, then superchargering it and seeing how fast it self destructs.

But I won't. Because the magic wand gearbox is near perfect, and the flywheel is pretty good too.

I built the nicest 998 you could ever ask for.

It had a ported and polished head with huge ports and valves, lightened flywheel and backplate, balanced, cammed, timed in, twin su's and a super close ratio box on a 3.7 diff.

It was the sweetest motor I reckon i have owned. Spun like a sewing machine and performed really well. A real thoroughbred. if you would dare to spend the cash on a 998, they get a pretty nice result.

But if a 1275 was sitting on your floor allready....

If size really mattered we'd all be driving f250's or the like!!

It's not the size, it's the way u use it m8

Be interesting to see how Cush's 850 project turns out...

as smooth as a bucket of nails one review likened the 1275 cooper S to.

1275 engines are good as a basis to make power and torque. But they never were as smooth as a smallbore (even a 1098), because all the whirly bits inside are way heavier.

cush..go ahead and drop a blower on it, bet you can't kill it :D

I'd been running around in my slightly modified 850 for a while (cam head etc), then recently got to drive a bone stock 850 again...I'd forgotten just how smooth. Absolutely magic for tootling around town in.

Smooth as a babys bum actually. Longevity is probably better too - I had my 998 expire recently after 280,000 hard km and still wasnt using oil or blowing smoke. I would think that the 1275 may not last as long but then if I had a new one sitting in the garage I could probably force myself to slot it in at a pinch...

Again - horses for courses and stay with what you like. 998 revs its tits off and yes you have to work the box to drive it but isnt that the whole fun point of owning a mini? I would love to get an 850cc and massage it to be a real sleeper( I reckon the noise would be absolutely fantastic).

Hooroo

It's kinda why i might have prefferred a Cooper 998 over the S, it might have given me an excuse to build another super 998...

But my funds and allocated time can only be spent on one car at the moment...
