My old K used to smell of fuel in the cabin from time to time. If i left a jumper in there for a few days it would come out smelling of fuel and oil.

The guy i used to take my car to for servicing (he's a Mini owner) never found any problems. I just accepted the fact that she emitted lovely old car smells and left it at that.

I kind of found it enjoyable after awhile. Not in the sense that i was getting high off fumes or anything, but because the smell of engine and mechanics went hand in hand with driving a classic car. It reminded me that i'm driving something made of metal, not plastic like today's cars.

While I like that, and love old cars and their smells, the CEO, CFO and CIO's I meet with from many companies dont really like the smell of fuel :D they dont mind good wine and sometimes expensive cigars but not fuel... ;)

Pete.

First you said this....

Howdy,

Well, been driving Jenna to work for a while now and things are sweet as. Goes like a rocket, bags of fun and easy drive.

This morning, I started her up and drove to work, when I got in the office, the guy next to me goes "Man you smell like fuel!"
This has never happened before... same fuel I always use, and same drive in... I did have much more traffic today, so sat there idling for much longer at times, but nothing like this has happened before.

Window was closed most of the time, except I opened it for a little bit ... I have a centre exit with the tip cut downwards, the rear windows were closed too.
Yes, there is still a hole in my firewall... which needs some grommets and stuff but ...

Anyone have any ideas, advice, experience?

Pete.
Then you said this....

I had fuel and engine smells in cabin until I put the Smiths PCV valve back on. It's connected to both ports on the Weber manifold. No stinks now...
They may not be as Bling as a K&N toy filter on the breather, but they work. I don't seem to have any power loss either!
PCV gets replaced by a catch tank for circuit work, only takes me 5 mins to swap it all.

Kev, you talking about that pipe from the crank case breather to the carb??
I have put that on, been on for about 2 weeks of driving, maybe 3

Pete.

I wonder if they are related? :?

Morris, I have no idea what you mean :S

The hose from crankcase breather to carby has been there for weeks... and it never smelled of fuel before.

What are you saying?

Peter.

Pete is that vent hose onto the side of the carb, or into the Ramflo filter case.... should be onto carb.

Hey Kev,

Yeah, its from Crankcase breather to the carby itself.
You know the tube you cut and put on... before I pulled the motor out the 2nd time.

The one you used cable ties on, I have replaced the cable ties with proper clamps...

Can you make sense of what Morris 1100 means?? Im curious because it may be something I overlooked... but dont undertstand his point...

Pete.

Morris,

If you mean that the cause of the fuel smell is this pipe, no, thats not the case.
Its a new motor, Ive had this pipe on since I threw the motor into the car... It hasnt been in that long :D

Pete.

yeah keep your foot out of the throttle until after it's on cam, don't treat it like a light switch. it'll pull better off cam with part throttle anyway.

Yep, I know that... I was testing because that day when I was in traffic the car was not on cam at all... just sitting idle, then a little move forward, a little more, etc.

So I wanted to kind of test that...

Pete.

you have to remember that a piston rising and falling both pushes and sucks. This with an overlap cam means that when a full revving with[b}out[/b] both induction and exhaust happening there are pulses happening. The fuel is going in both directions (and being wasted BTW). This is almost the fuel stand off I was talking about.

In race cars its quite common to have a cloud of fuel vapour at the end of the stub stacks. It comes and goes depending on the revs and is quite spectacular in a mini sports sedan with the weber stacks intruding into the cabin (as you could back then)

Doc's right - dont just tramp the throttle open in any car. Let the induction and compression do its work. On a car with a fuel pump in the carby (non SU) by tramping the throttle open all you do is pour raw fuel into the bores and out the exhaust until the engine actually catches up. On a cold engine you run the risk of flooding and wetting a plug. Then its a limp until the plug clears itself.

My Dellorto has never smelt...i guess that's a given on the moke, but when it was in the clubby it didn't smell either...i guess maybe being a 78' and no hole in the firewall either - but Jenna doesn't have a hole as well i think?

Off Cam your probably having fuel come out the carb as Mike and others have said..Search for a suitable filter and it might help contain the fumes?

Pete's has no `firewall hole', but he's put a hole below the HS6 to clear the jet, the stink is maybe coming in there..
Could also be the float chamber flooding, I don't think the carb has been kitted lately.
