Your new straps will only be as good as the clean metal to metal contact they make each end

With engine running faster than 2800rmp the output from the alternator should be 14.3 - 14.7 volts

just an update

I started the car yesterday and it was cranking really slow with the new battery, havent used the car for a while but the negative terminal has been disconnected after the day the car started.
Jump started it and the cranks sounded faster & stronger and it started.
checked the voltage while revving and its around 14.6 - 14.7 V

Drove the car twice yesterday for 20 mins then got home disconnected the -ve terminal and today it wont start weak cranking even with the jump started fully charged.

Tested the screw driver trick with the solenoid and it cranks.

bad starter motor?

if you still have that little volt meter gizmo check how much is is at the back off the ignition switch, and if you can clean the conection, i could nt beleive how much of a difference that made to the gound- on my horn, my horn origanally sounded like a duck farting
