Yeh, the initial thought was that the tube wasn't sealing right. Pulled the tube out and reinstalled with blue silicone gasket stuff. Didn't change anything....

It isn't just oozing out, it is flying out!!

But yeh, maybe oil being flung off the crank??

P.S. Thanks Steve (justminis), I'll get it right eventually!! It is all an opportunity really... get the crank wedged while its out for balancing, 8) rods etc balanced... rebuild the diff, check over the box... while the motor is out put the shell up on stands and play with the hydro....

I'm excited

I had a similar prob with my 1100. I found out there are different length dip stick tubes. I replaced it with a longer one and the prob ceased, just food for thought.

Cheers,

I'll look into that too!

I have heard that Keith Calver does one with o rings to help the seal. Any advice on which tube is the best??

Matt
I have one of Keiths dipstick tubes coming to check it out
Will let you know what it is like when it arrives

With your engine vibration problem you may have to check that the crank is not cracked or bent

Cheers Ken,

I look forward to hearing about the dipstick tube.

First job - see bank for loan
second job - engine out / stripped
third job - crank crack tested
fourth - all bits balanced (new pistons & rings so rods balanced too) & checked for bentedness??!!

It'll get there in the end!!

Now, what else can i do while the motor is out......

Thought of that,

It's got a 1/2 in lobe cam reground to what i was told was 'cooper s mark ii spec, plus a bit' It has the lift of cooper s, and is fairly mild as one would expect.

But, it is mainly going to be an everyday driver, with the missus next to me, so hooning * excuse me, spirited driving  * is not going to be the norm!

I need it civilised at low revs, but can get up and boogie when needed,
any suggestions? (i think RE13 may not give enough down low, is that correct?)

Did you end up finding what the problem was with your engine blowing oil? I have the exact same problem, just rebuilt and oil is coming out quicker than it goes in almost. Spays all over the front of the subframe when driving. Lots of white milky crap accumulating in breathers and under cap?

Milky stuff forming in the cap etc is emulsified oil and water meaning you've got water/coolant getting into your oil somewhere . Normally I'd say blown head gasket but is also possible from a crack somewhere or bad corrosion in the head or block .

Never found what the problem was, motor out stripped down and rebuilt along with the box, so hopefully whatever it was will now be fixed.

Head gasket was fine, no milky stuff anywhere.

As said above, milky stuff is one of the signs of a head gasket failure.

Good luck

Matt

Well, after inspecting my clutch cover breather i found it full of white paste and what appeared to be a rusted bit of steel wool!?

Putting the breater back on with no mesh in it stoped the leaks. Butafter getting a pot scourer and stuffing it in there the oil again started to come out of dipstick hole... :(

The engine is a 1380, has clutch cover breather and onesmall little rocker cover breather. Is this sufficient breathing for this size engine?

There are no head gasket problems causing emulsified oil because cooling syst has been pressure tested and cylinder compressions are all fine.

Bugger of a problem..... :x

I'm running a 1380 and I've had this problem, tracked it down to the PCV with excessive crankcase pressure, these are sized to engine capacity and the std 1275 PCV doesn't quite cope with 1380, tracked one doen from a Morris 1500 and swapped it over since then I haven't had any problems like this even though I do have high crankcase pressure, caused by blowby on the rings from having, still after 12 years, 215 pound compression on all 4 cyl.

I was with the motor breathing crew first but if you have the plastic insert I'm with Aaron it is worn.

Take it out wrap thread tap around it and put it back in end of problem.

It's not a leak from the dip stick as if a thread is leaking, when you have the dip stick out the little specks of oil are flicking out.
