022X2S2M09 28339 is a Sep 1977 Mini S and the firewall body number 13037 M2/22 is within the correct range.

XNHAB18Y 101592 is a June 1978 Mini S and it would have a firewall body number around 15000 M2/22.

The panel that had 28339 was yellow, and on the car there is only traces of red, grey and black so I doubt it is actually correct but that is good to know, cheers.

BMC & Leyland Australia, like other vehicle manufacturers, specified quite clearly where the various identities were stamped and what fonts were used. This is what registration authorities would have used, and should still be using.

Here's the sheet for the Mini in 1973 but most if not all details continued through Mini production.

Interestingly I have a YG2S6 (according to the compliance plate - dated 12/72) Clubby down the back behind the shed (the engine no is 1000XXXX so assume its a 998.) I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any number stamped behind the master cylinders - I've looked carefully). It does have "YG2S6 XXXX" clearly stamped on the rad shroud. No sign of an M2 etc... Its mate, a 76 Van, has a number and MV/21 behind the master cyls. The rad shroud has numbers but is too mangled to read..

Your Mini 1100 pov pack should have M2/21 on the firewall. Something like this in the high 800s

Hi GTO, can you pan out to identify exactly where this stamp should be? I had a pretty close look and theres' nothing obvious.

I can look again if I know where I should be concentrating....

Cheers, Ian

Yours should be in this area. Cars 1294 and 1383 have theirs here.

But it is not impossible for a car to have it in a slightly different spot or not at all. You could even check the 1969 position in the drain channel just above the wiper motor

The area shown is directly behind the master cylinder. but it may not have a number stamped.
There would seem to be a period around late 72 early 73 where this number was not stamped. I have an early 73 clubman that does not have the number stamped on the bulkhead or on the drain channel.

Thanks for your input everyone, I think I've decided to pass on this one and try to find one with clean numbers. After contacting Service NSW it's possible that getting registration might be difficult and even if I do, resale will likely be difficult with dodgy numbers.

Hi Daniel, Its not my money ..but it is yours so you have to be happy with the process.

All the " numbers" discussion has been interesting and useful.... but not for you.

Your real issue is "what do the people who will register the car require". By "the people" I mean the actual persons in the actual Motor Registry who will be taking your money and issuing you with paperwork. If the car is interesting to you and a reasonable price then it's worth pursuing .... if not, then look elsewhere.

With old cars (especially Minis) things are rarely open and shut. A body here, an engine there... other bits acquired from somewhere else .. with paper trails (old rego docs) long gone.

It's really a question to ask of the relevant authorities. Here's the car; will you register it? Or, what do you need to register it? I've had several discussions with "officials" which were only resolved when it became obvious the "my" paperwork was the correct version of "their" document ...which had been superseded by my later edition....

Good luck, Ian
