I had the same symptoms a number of years back. The temp guage hardly moved if at all, the oil pressure remained exactly where it always sits. I only started to suspect something when the engine noise increased as a popping or spluttering, shortly after the power started to drop somewhat at which point I headed home as I was not long into the journey. Head gasket blown between 2 & 3 and the waterways also out to the egde. It was an old generic gasket and I replaced with an ACL, no further problems.

The head is off being machined although they didn't seem to really think the head was warped badly. The exhaust valve seats were bad, even though it was sold in Japan as being for unleaded I don't think they actually changed anything. The valves might be why I have always had idling issues with it.

Hopefully this solves it and it doesn't happen a third time. The last gasket was a Victor Reinz, now I have the ACL one that I will use.

I might replace the fan switch in the thermostat sandwich plate with a VDO sender and fit a VDO gauge. There just isn't much space to fit additional gauges without it looking bad/messy.
