I like the suggestion to remove wires from the light switch. Leaving the battery feed connected to the light switch (should be brown/blue) then remove the others one by one and see if anything makes a difference. There should be three "outputs" - dip switch, front parking lights, rear tail lights+panel lights. Might narrow down which section of wiring has a problem. If the three outputs are disconnected and still getting hot, then it would mean the switch might be the problem.

Might be worth double checking this lead and connection. The big rusty washer may contribute to the issue.

Is the earth lead from the battery serviceable? Adding a jumper lead from the negative post to a good alternative earthing point in the boot would help eliminate that part of the electrical system as the fault.

Hi Larry
I wouldn't be happy with that earth wire as Winabbey say's.
A replacement one would be a good move.

Cheers

Would anyone be able to post an Australian Mk2 wiring diagram with the wiring colour coding as all the ones I can find seem to be Mk1 with oil light and one speed wipers, whereas the Mk2 didn't have an oil light and had a two speed wiper.

This will help my wire heating quest.

Larry, my Cooper S Engineering Series book has the layout of the loom pictured, along with colours and connectors, to show what wire should appear where and bundled. You surely have a copy of this magnificant book???

Just found another clue which may be associated with "Wires Getting Hot".

My Mini has not seen water for 30+ years and is parked in a waterproof shed. When testing the lighting hot wire problem, I am noticing that the speedo glass is misting up. It can't be water. So it must be electricly related. There are light bulbs that work Ok and voltage regulator and that works the fuel & temp gauge Ok, also the 2 blinker lights and they are Ok.

Any ideas??

There is no electricity in front of the speedo face panel, so the misting between it and the glass must be caused by/from something else. I am perplexed how you have tested the fuel and temp gauges. Or are you saying that you have checked for 10v at both?

Imagine my perplexion. Could there be a relationship?

Could it be that the high beam light is so hot that it is burning the cardboard ring in the speedo and starting to make smoke?

Maybe these pictures will help.

Which cardboard ring are you referring to? All the indicator lights in the speedo are mounted in lampholders which are push fits into the back of the speedo dial, and thus no cardboard is in contact with any lamps.
Having installed a Vinwire harness into one of my (restoration) cars, and removing an original harness in another, and re-installing it, I have no ever had the sort of issues you are experiencing. No you have a suitable wiring diagram I'd start checking the wiring in your car for correct connections.

As long as you have the factory bulbs there should be no issue. Take them out to confirm what they are.

Each hole for a warning light bulb has a cardboard tube between the rear panel and front face.

The loom didn't come with original BMC screw in bulb connectors so I had to find bayonet bulbs and they maybe the wrong wattage.

They should be 2.2w (12v)

The Driver's Handbook that I have says that the correct style etc of the panel lamps is 987, which is a 12v 2.2 watt screw in. You'd need to have the equivalent in a bayonet.
