Hi do I replace the rack or rebuild the rack? Comments. It rattles a lot. Can I remove and replace it without entirely dropping the subframe to the ground?

Best to rebuild, the new racks are apparently rubbish. It can be changed eithout dropping the subframe entirely.

Is it definitely the rack at fault?

Yes clunks when hitting a bump or releasing the clutch moving forward. If I were to get it out I will need to lower the subframe right? What are the parts I will need to rebuild are there any machining required?

Thanks

It depends on what rack you have. Australian minis had locally sourced racks, but yours could have been changed in the last 50 years

Some can be rebuilt and some can’t

I’d start by checking the u bolts are tight under the carpet and then try and diagnose the source of the noise before you take out the rack

I am not sure your problem is the rack.

Since my one is a Rover I was able to just lower the rear of the subframe just enough to remove it but since yours is an earlier subframe it probably needs to be dropped straight down (not all the way). You will need to disconnect the exhaust, engine steadies and brake line. Everything else should be ok.

There is no machining required. This gives you an idea of the process https://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/322176-steering-rack-overhaul-uk-type-mkii/

If you a certain you want to do the rack, I would try and source a reconditioned Aussie one from one of the Australian Mini suppliers.

Matt Read in Brisbane has reconditioned Aussie AYA6001 racks.

They are inexpensive new but probably made in China

I am not sure about that. I would expect that Matt would send one anywhere in order to help someone. I have no idea if he usually sends internationally but he does try to help everyone. He often posts online looking for who he was supposed to send stuff to etc as he loses track of messages and details.

If it comes to it I could get one and send it to you, I work nearby to him.
