Hey Guys,

My mini woes continue yesterday no brake lights, now fixed..
After that I get in start her up and drive off, a few splutters etc, its cold I expect that. Drive a bit more missing heaps, can sort of drive/rev through it!!! anyway got home let the car idle, the idle is pretty rough not normal, thought it could be dirty plugs so I cleaned them that wasn't it. This morning drove to work just made it!!! backfiring/missing/rough idle, basically f**ked

So what could be my problem??? it has been wet so maybe its just moisture around leads and distributor, I haven't had the mini for long so I dont really know how it behaves in wet conditions do mini have fits in the wet..Not having a radiator in front means a lot of water gets in around the electrics

your comments are most welcome.

Cheers Stuart.

mine had the same problem...

prob start with changing the points or just adjusting them and the condensor...also maybe just get a new set of plugs too....even if uve cleaned them, one may have a crack in the insulator part and may not be firing properly........(they are cheap and proly need a change anyway)

also check or test the coil...primary and secondary coils.

other than that maybe check ur float level and mixtures are right....

cant think of anything else.

Sounds like timing to me. Maybe it's time to take it to someone? ;)

my 4year old toyota landcruiser prado
70k kms
sudden splutter and shudder throughout car 3days ago, still drove ok
original spark plugs were nice and clean
replaced 3 spark plugs and the problem was fixed

if you havent had the car for a long time, you probably havent changed the plugs. get new ones

in case that doesnt work, maybe the fuel isnt getting into the cylinders, so theres a kind of empty firing/turning. after the fuel pump, unplug the fuel line to the carby and start the car. there should be shots of fuel coming through. make sure you hold a cup underneath

hope it works

And don't light up!!!!

I would take it to a mechanic mate. Try and find a good mini expert near you and ask him to give it a look over. Hang around and watch/learn from him. Ask some questions and generally look like you love your mini (which we all do anyway). You'll learn something, the mechanic will probably get your car running a whole lot better and you get peice of mind. If you pay cash and don't ask for/want a reciept then you can usually get a fair deal. That's how I usually do it :-)

I love my mechanic, he's a legend.

Thanks for all the help guys,

When I got the car 3 months ago I started a maintence plan.

All the basics you know new filters, oil, plugs, points
checked coil carb etc set timming etc brakes so ive got a pretty good idea where its at.

I have found a mechanic here in Launceston who has 3 minis of his own so I feel pretty confident with his ablity he also specialises in Jaguars and old britsh cars so he is passionate..

I checked the simple things first, is there moisture around the dizzy leads coil? Using WD40 gave a bit of a spray! What do ya know running reasonably nicely. I think Pooee might be right timming seems a bit out. More stuffing around with toys on the weekend.

I am also currently doing a disc brake conversion using DR MINI's honda idea comming along nicely (just need more time). will let you know the results...

cheers Stuart

Also Tassies the place to come cruising wicked roads and wonderful views so if your looking for a cool mini holiday I can definately recommend Tas.
