What's the best product to remove paint of plastic flares?

I've always been nervous using paint stripper on flares- not sure what it might do to abs plastic of the original flares, so I take the safe road and sand off the old colour coat and some of the primer under it. Then repair cracks, breaks, etc. with fibreglass from the inside.
