thanks Dave, was that car street legal?

thanks Harley, the engine is actually still in my 2007 civic Type R

thanks Timmy, that's interesting, mini weight can vary from 580 to 700kg for a late 90's
that seams a silly rule. I could put a b16 or b18 in it, then after a sign off, slap a
supercharger or turbo on it which would give it way more power than the K20. I'm not on
facebook at the moment but may have to look into it if I want to chase down Dutchy.

thanks Ian, nice mini.

There’s a separate factor for a turbo - 2.5 x the vehicle weight. So a 650kg mini could have a 1.6L turbo

There’s plenty of reading material here
https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/infra ... etins/ncop

Of course if you change things after the test, why not just keep an a series engine and subframe and swap it in for rego every year and just avoid the engineering all together and hope you don’t get caught

With enough money, time and engineering you can pass a lot of modifications

Registering a Mini with a new shell I imagine would require it to be passed off as an old previously regoed Mini?

that's the whole problem - putting the numbers from a previously registered car on a new shell is "rebirthing".. what they don't know won't hurt you, but if you get caught they'll crush the car

It's possible that the cars Andrew @ MMW was referring to were stamped with the numbers from a rusted out and scrapped UK shell, then shipped out - replacing a rusty shell with a new body is perfectly legal in UK, since the shell (with it's appropriate paperwork - V5? rego number?) was legal when it left there, it's legal when it gets here.. as long as the paperwork shows the "car" was more than 25 years old then it shouldn't be an issue to register. That could what the authorisation from Canberra was - import approval

I have a mate (though haven't seen him in a looong time) with a Turbo 4 litre Toyota V8 (1UZ) in an early Celica, according to Google the original weight of that was 1030kg - 1030 x 2.75 is well under 4000 - it isn't an ICV...

Thanks for all the incoming info guys. A lot of if and but's
to be considered. I guess the easiest route is to forget about
a new shell and buy a complete car. Then get it road worthy
and registered. Then do what you want with it like I think most
people do and have been doing since I was a young lad.

If I had the cash I'd bring in a new shell in a heartbeat.. to build a race car

I don’t think this is true.. or, if it is< the regulations have changed ..and may not apply retrospectively..

Its not about what they don’t know... In NSW the rules basically say...Take your unregistered car to one of our authorised Blue Slip providers. Show them the paperwork, show them a stamped number on the shell that matches the paperwork and, on behalf of the NSW Government, they will approve the registration of said vehicle.

My problem was that UK Minis, of a certain vintage at least, don’t have any number stamped on the shell... Thankfully they wanted “documentation” and they accepted a Heritage Certificate that contained the Body Number that is stamped on a plate welded to the shell. They were happy.

Is the term “re-birthing” actually used/defined in any of the regulations? It used to be a relatively common practice to take a smashed car, buy a new shell from the manufacturer and combine all the bits to arrive at a “repaired” vehicle. All entirely legal. Re-birthing was a term used to describe taking an intact (stolen?) vehicle, removing its identity and replacing it with the identity of a wreck. Highly illegal. BMIHT shells don’t have identities ... until you give them one.

There’s really no sense in discussing this as the devil is in the details. If push comes to shove you need a competent lawyer (although I’ve found they generally fold to a reasonable argument) and a copy of the *current* regulations. I’ve had a few brushes with the rego authorities that have turned out well when I pointed out that my copy of the rules was more up to date than their copy. Or that they weren’t applying the proper rule... “Your track is too wide” ...”Not its not”..... “Its supposed to be X and yours is Y. “ (Looks at Regs) “But X applies to an ordinary Mini.... and mine is an S ..for which Y is listed”... “oh”

The only real reason I can see for not using a BMIHT shell is that it would lead to a VEEEERY expensive Mini after you’ve paid to buy, ship, prep, paint etc said shell.

Cheers, Ian
