Wheels are old ROH style, with not much outwards offset, doesn't need the flares for them to fit under. Tyres are Yokos 165/70

Probably not wheel offset related then...

I have the same wheels and tyres on my mini K. The ROH wheels were made specially for LS minis. A good combination.
I was hoping this would lead to some explanation about suspension setups, but looks like just the result of some odd circumstances you survived.

I'd recommend a bigger sport's steering wheel!!!

It's not a tiny sports wheel, but certainly nothing near the size of the original

A grippier steering wheel would help if you drive "soft handed"...

PS make sure your steering rack is AOK before you are very much older  :D

I think that’s the moral of the story (too used to putting around town in the 850). And don’t be a goose with the right foot when getting close to full lock

Here is your way to redemption and absolution from blame...

O Mary, by thy pure and Immaculate Conception, make my body pure and my soul holy.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

O my Mother, preserve me this day from mortal sin.

Is it worth restoring a Mni engine? I found a used and engine store, maybe you’re on the lookout for a ford engine here https://orbimotors.com/used-car-engines/mini/

Sure...so long as the block isn't holed etc...even that could probably be fixed...
